THE CHURCH AS THEATRE, February 14, 2004
This review is from: Blazing Away [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This amazing concert at St.Anne's Church is haunting and dark. The lighting is surreal and some of the songs are just plain scary! Marianne opens with a lengthy French song entitled "Les Prisons du Roy". Uufortunatley I don't speak or understand French, but I'm sure the lyrics are somewhat dismal, judging by her delivery.
For the most part, the songs are gleaned from "Broken English" and "Strange Weather", but there are some wonderful choices such as "Times Square" and one she wrote backstage entitled "When I Find My Life". Her delivery is absolutely spot on and her voice is strong and tortured.
There is just something so stunning about the stage and the black and white outside shots of broken glass in windows, the lonely streets and deserted bridges....really captivating!
But beyond the cinematography and the music are the revealing interviews included between songs. Marianne speaks of what it is like to be a junkie with depth and truth. It's also great to hear her commentary on the song choices, such as her reason for recording John Lennon's "Working Class Hero". She also expounds on "Why'd Ya Do It?", "Strange Weather" and others. All these are also filmed in black and white with Marianne sitting on a barstool. Pure and simple.
I need to also acknowledge her band. They were unbelievable! I was especially blown away by the horn player, who was showcased on a couple of numbers (sorry, I can't recall his name). Dr. John was the keyboard player, with Fernando Saunders on bass. The names of the other musicians unfortunatly escape me, but they were all fantastic.
The crowd were obviously adoring and generous, giving her a touching standing ovation which brought her to tears.
This is a must-have for all lovers of Marianne, music, drama, and theatre of darkness.
