More About the Author

Bleach is author Tite Kubo's second title. Kubo made his debut with ZOMBIEPOWDER, a four-volume series for Weekly Shonen Jump. To date, Bleach has been translated into numerous languages and has also inspired an animated TV series that began airing in Japan in 2004. Beginning its serialization in 2001, Bleach is still a mainstay in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump. In 2005, Bleach was awarded the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award in the shonen (boys) category.

The fullbring arc comes to a close after just 5 volumes. If I would pick one word to describe this volume and the arc as a whole, it would be "inconsequential." It just didn't feel all that important. Maybe Mr. Kubo felt that he wanted to do something "light" after the oh-so-serious, over-long, and bloated Arrancar arc. The arc centers around the "mystery" involving Ichigo's deputy Soul Reaper badge, an object so minor, that for Mr. Kubo to be exploring this only now, in the 50's, makes the whole thing feel like an afterthought. Personally, I wasn't the least bit interested in the badge, so when we hear an explanation about its significance, it seemed very ho-hum. The story was devoid of any dramatic tension. It was obvious from the get-go that the Soul Reapers were so much stronger than the Fullbringers, with a couple of exceptions. It never felt like any of the Soul Reapers were in any danger, and they certainly acted that way throughout vols 53-54. Some of their battles were so quick and easy, it was laughable. Maybe that was the point and this arc was intended to be a more filler comedy arc, that's what it felt like to me. The best and funniest part of this story was Rukia, her scolding Ichigo in vol 53, and getting turned into a stuffed animal by Riruka. It reminded me of Kon, who hasn't made an appearance in a while, which is unfortunate. Otherwise this arc as a whole wasn't bad, wasn't great either, it was just "okay."

This was a good conclusion to the Fullbringer Arc, which seemed more like a filler arc than anything else to me. The volume is a good addition to the series even if the story arc was not that great.

Tite-san has a great way of both telling and delivering a story. His work is incredibly universal and relatable. This arc had a finality that actually mimics Ichigo's in its own way... "I can stop here and be satisfied... or I can keep going."

T.K. is probably the only writer that can make me feel something for the villain. This was a nice end to this short arc. I look forward to reading the next arc and seeing how he will end the series though I'll be sad to see it go.
