The story they tell embodies Dickens' merciless indictment of the Court of Chancery and its bungling, morally corrupt handling of the endless case of Jarndyce v. Jarndyce, giving the novel its scope and meaning.

Narrators are all.,

Does one have to say anything about Dickens? This is the usual wonderful Dickens-type delight but more important in the case of Audiobooks is the narrator. A bad narrator and you can throw the product in the bin. Robert Whitfield is fine and you will really enjoy the read. AVOID David Case - for anything - he never knows what he is reading and murders books.

Best Audio Book I Have Ever Listened To!,
By Humble Mozart-Devotee (Iowa, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bleak House (Audio CD)
I obtained this from Interlibrary Loan -- and then requested my own local library to purchase it. This performance by Robert Whitfield is a triumph of insight, emotion, compassion and humor. This story is so much deeper than the BBC/Masterpiece Classic television mini-series was, even though it also was remarkable. This performance captivated me completely, I even re-played quite a few of the discs after I had finished hearing all 29 of them for the first time, because it was so good I couldn't get enough of it. You will be amazed how a male actor can voice a large array of female characters, each one a unique voice, each one completely recognizable, and completely believable. Needless to say his voicing of the male characters achieved the same result. I hope Robert Whitfield will accept my congratulations on this production, surely it must be one of the greatest achievements of his entire career! What a Master! I urge you to listen to this production, by any means you can. You will not be disappointed. One note: the manufacturer has placed the very last sentence on the very last disc in error. The sentence says: "This was read by Simon Vance." You might think they'd listen to their own product and correct such a stupid error! So please point out to your own librarian this error, so they don't replicate it in their card catalogue. Go for it my friend!

Bleak House is quite an undertaking whether you are reading it or listening to it. But, these 29!!! cds are read so beautifully, it is a joy to listen to them. I was driving and listening and almost drove off the road, because I was laughing so hard at one of the lists of rhyming names. I can't rate these cd's high enough!
