From the Author

Many readers have asked me to return to the events of The Heat of the Moon and allow Rachel and her sister Michelle to resolve their feelings toward Judith. This book is for those readers -- but I believe it stands on its own and can be enjoyed by those who haven't read any of my previous books. As always, I've tried to keep the suspense level high while also delving into my characters' deepest emotions. Bleeding Through marks a major turning point for Rachel and changes her relationships with the people she loves most. I hope you'll come along with her on her journey!

More About the Author

Sandra Parshall is the Agatha Award-winning author of the Rachel Goddard Mysteries. Although her series features a young female veterinarian and animals abound in the stories, the books aren't cozies. They've been called thrillers, suspense novels, and dark mysteries, and the author considers them a blend of all three subgenres. Sandra and her journalist husband share their home in the Washington, DC, area with two unbelievably spoiled cats, Emma and Gabriel, who have acquired their own fan base on Facebook and never let Mom forget it for a second.

Sandra is a past member of the national board of Sisters in Crime and a member of Mystery Writers of America. She interviews other writers regularly for the The Big Thrill, newsletter of International Thriller Writers, and she reviews crime fiction for the Washington Independent Review of Books.

Her latest Rachel Goddard novel, POISONED GROUND (March 2014)), is a fast-paced story of the repercussions when a huge corporation invades the small mountain community of Mason County with the intention of building a sprawling resort for the wealthy. Their plans involve taking land from people who don't want to sell. No one is more vocally opposed to the company's predatory tactics than Rachel, and her outspokenness complicates the work of her new husband, Sheriff Tom Bridger. The jobless poor ally themselves with the money-hungry rich, and a small-scale civil war erupts. When a beloved husband and wife are gunned down on the farm they refused to sell, it seems supporters will stop at nothing to ensure the success of the resort. As the violence escalates, Tom and Rachel discover the attacks are more sinister than they appear, rooted deep in the poisoned ground beneath their county's bucolic surface.

To say I read a lot is an understatement. I discovered Sandra Parshall's first mystery in 2007 and really liked it. I've read every book she has published since, all equally well written and wonderful stories. Bleeding Through moves like greased lightening. I didn't want to put it down until I had read the last word. I have to say that this is not only the best Rachel Goddard Mystery Sandra has written to date, it's the best mystery I have read in a long time - by any author.

Sandra Parshall's latest Rachel Goddard mystery represents the type of fiction I love to read. Like its predecessors, Bleeding Through is a serious exploration of a complex social issue. In an attempt to escape a stalker, Rachel's sister, Michelle, comes from the D.C. area to stay with her in the rural Virginia county where Rachel has relocated her veterinary practice. At the very same time, Deputy Sheriff Tom Bridger, Rachel's love interest, begins an investigation into the murder of a young woman who was trying to prove the innocence of a man convicted of a serious crime. Thus begins a real page turner.

Parshall very successfully keeps her readers engaged in the story with realistic plotting, psychological depth and interesting characters. I would suggest that readers begin with The Heat of the Moon, the debut novel in this series. I found that details addressed in that book, provided the foundation for later installments and insight into Rachel's past.

If you are looking for a terrific read, this is a book for you!

I received this Uncorrected Proof from the author. Not having read her first books in the series, I have to say this is an extremely good read. Just the way I like a mystery to go. In other words, you don't know who the culprit is till the main character does. In this case, Rachel Goddard. Kept me in suspense and on my toes right up to the end. If you have read Mrs. Parshalls previous books in the series, then you will definitely want to read this one, too! Now I just need to catch up. Thank you Mrs. Parshall for an excellent read.

Format: Hardcover
This suspense-filled novel is built around characters you care about, especially its protagonist, Dr. Rachel Goddard, veterinarian extraordinaire. The book opens when Rachel and her significant other, Deputy Sheriff Tom Bridger, working with a group of teens cleaning up roadside trash in a rural area in southwestern Virginia, discover the body of Shelley Beecher. The girl, a 22-year-old first-year law student, had been missing for a month, having disappeared after leaving her volunteer job at an Innocence Project office in Fairfax County, in Northern Virginia, an area hours away from where her body had been dumped like so much trash into the bottom of a ravine. Tragically, the group of youngsters discovering the body included Shelley's 17-year-old sister, Megan.

There is a common theme in this tale, that of stalkers and their victims. It includes Rachel's history wherein a man who stalked and nearly killed her was ultimately caught and tried, although because of a cop's biased testimony was only sentenced to a psychiatric hospital. Now, Rachel's psychologist sister, Michelle, announces that she needs to see Rachel immediately because a stalker in her own life has her feeling threatened: her office has been broken into, and she is receiving frequent e-mails, phone calls and notes from him, and she feels unsafe in her own hometown of Bethesda, Maryland. With no physical evidence, or any idea of who is doing this to her, there is little or nothing that the local police can do. This causes Tom's investigation to necessarily take a back seat to the more immediate threat that has come into his and Rachel's lives.

Format: Paperback
In Mason County, Virginia, veterinarian Rachel Goddard and Deputy Sheriff Tom Bridger live together in an old farmhouse. The pair accompanied by two-dozen teenagers is picking up trash on a rural roadside when they find a corpse inside a plastic. One of the students seventeen year old Megan Beecher realizes the victim is her missing sister in law school student Shelley.

Tom investigates the murder of Shelley, which he thinks ties back to her legal efforts to free convicted murderer Vince Lankford for beating to death Brian Hadley. Meanwhile, Rachel's frightened sister Michelle the psychiatrist has fled her Maryland home and DC office to hide from a persistent stalker in her sibling's Virginia farmhouse. Michelle's husband Kevin says there is no one after his wife; knowing her sister's phobic dependencies and trepidations Rachel agrees with her brother-in-law until the stalking turns on her affirms even the paranoid can sometimes be right.

The latest Rachel Goddard mystery (see Under the Dog Star) is a strong thriller with two fabulous cases. Tom works the law student murder with his assumption being either Hadley's family killed Shelley or her premise that Lankford is innocent is right and the real murderer silenced her. At the same time Rachel tries to keep her sister safe starting with Michelle's mental state to the realization there really is a stalker. Both scenarios are super as Sandra Parshall provides a fabulous mystery.
