Editorial Reviews

Review

"The authors have provided insights into the promise of blended learning, and educators can build upon their community of inquiry model to enhance their teaching practice." (Teachers College Record, 02/25/08)

Review

"Garrison and Vaughan have provided something both welcome and rare: practical advice about how to use technology in education that is grounded in a sound theoretical framework. The community of inquiry theory is the basis for valuable guidance on blending classroom and distance learning for everyone facing the challenges and opportunities of using online technologies in higher education."
—Michael Grahame Moore, professor, The Pennsylvania State University, and editor, The American Journal of Distance Education

"Blended Learning in Higher Education advocates that leadership realize the potential for institutional transformation while providing fundamental practicality for faculty success. Garrison and Vaughan have made an invaluable contribution to the broader community of inquiry for everyone committed to blended learning excellence."
—Barbara E. Truman, director, Course Development and Web Services, University of Central Florida

"This book will make every university professor and administrator think about how they can improve the learning experience. Not only is it well-rooted in theory, but it is practical. The authors go through specific disciplines and how they might use blended learning; they also map out pathways for success. This is a must-read for those interested in blended learning."
—Dr. Frits Pannekoek, president, Athabasca University, Canada's Open University

"This book will be a great practical resource for university faculty and administrators trying to implement blended learning at their institutions. The wide range of real-world examples and clear guidelines will make it a powerful resource in the course redesign process."
—Charles R. Graham, Brigham Young University

"Blended Learning in Higher Education shows the way to the future for higher education practitioners and policymakers. If you are serious about your work in higher education, read this book."
—Terry Evans, Faculty of Education, Deakin University, Australia

"The Community of Inquiry is one of today's most influential theoretical frameworks in online learning research. In Blended Learning in Higher Education, Garrison and Vaughan show that it is an extremely useful tool for designing blended learning experiences as well."
—J. B. Arbaugh, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh

"An impressive book reflecting Randy Garrison's and Norm Vaughan's considerable enthusiasm and experience of Blended Learning. Read this if you really want to improve learning and teaching in higher education and share in Randy's and Norm’s success."
—Peter Bullen, University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom

There is a great abundance of literature on b-learning. Few, however, have the depth and practicality of Garrison & Vaughan. Technology and higher education have only focus on matters of access, but not for actual teaching excellence. Their model of b-learning is articulated through a Community of Inquiry (CoI), which is based on Constructivist approach for higher education. The book gives a well structured model (with guidelines, samples, etc.) which can be applied to almost any course. The limitations of the model are also explained. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to introduce technology to a higher learning scenario.
