My husband and I started juicing and making smoothies several months ago. Once we realized that using our blender would stay a daily part of our routine, we figured it was time for an upgrade. We did ALOT of research, trying to decide between a Vitamix and a Blendtec. First, let me say that in my opinion, you could buy either brand and end up a with a great blender. There was nothing about the Vitamix that made us think it would be a bad choice; we did find things that we thought wouldn't be the right fit for us. Here's why we chose the Blendtec over the Vitamix:
1) No need for a plunger with the Blendtec. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I hated the thought of having to stand over my blender and plunge the food down. To be fair though, I think with the more expensive versions, a plunger may not be needed.
2) The 96 oz. container and 4" 2 prong blade on the Blendtec. I figured this would be easier to clean than the Vitamix.
3) The Blendtec is shorter and will fit under most cabinets, the Vitamix is taller and therefore will not fit under most cabinets. Being short on cabinet space, it was important to me to be able to push my blender under the cabinet where it could stay "out" but not be in my way.
4) I liked that with the Blendtec, you could do wet or dry in the same container; from what I understand, Vitamix has separate containers for wet and dry.
5) This reason is a bit cheesy, but I thought the Blendtec was more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. If it's going to sit on my counter all the time, I want it to be pretty! :)
So far, I could not be happier!! Yes, for some tougher things like whole frozen strawberries, you have to run the smoothie cycle 2x. That's still ONLY 46 seconds. (and much faster than my old one that took many minutes) The texture is smooth, no chunks, no bits of spinach, perfect. This thing is ridiculously easy to clean. Compared to my older blender that a bunch of parts that you had to take apart, the Blendtec is a breeze to clean. Yes, it is loud. It's a blender. All blenders are loud. My Blendtec is no louder than my old one (a Waring Pro) and it blends 100x better.
Again, I think both brands are probably equally awesome and if you look at the features and figure out which one will fit your needs best, you'll no doubt be happy. I love my Blendtec and will recommend it to everyone.
One more thing, the recipe book that comes with the Blendtec is impressive. It's not the typical 30 page pamphlet that you get with most appliances. It is spiral bound with beautiful pictures and lots of good recipes. There are 10 sections with recipes for Appetizers (Dips, Jams, Salsas, Spreads); Beverages (Cocktails, Coffee, Milkshakes, Milk Substitutes, Smoothies, Whole Juices); Breakfast (Batters, Syrups); Breads (Bread Batters, Bread Dough); Soups; Fondues; Sauces; Salad Dressings; Pureed Foods; Desserts (Cakes, Ice Cream, Pies, Puddings, Miscellaneous Desserts).
