A thoroughly engrossing story, one that I've come back to time and time again..... a great book to curl up with on a winters night. It took me a while to realise that the genetic output of both the original owner and his friend Jonathan continue to pop up and take ownership of the house, due in part to a couple of "wrong side of the blanket" babies in the first few chapters.
Full of wonderful characters from all aspects of the social scale, in different eras, Norah Lofts has a wonderful command of her people and their lives.

Not great, not mind bogling, but pleasant. This book starts with a love story in the late 1600s. It is in a house built by a man for the Queen Elizabeth, then it follows the house to the next owners accused of witchcraft, and on it goes until 1913. You experience the love of every owner, and the losses. this book has a lot of the same characters as Norah Lofts put in her book Parageters. So if you like one, you should like the other.
