5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating view of English history through the story of one house, December 23, 2005

This review is from: Bless This House (Hardcover)
A thoroughly engrossing story, one that I've come back to time and time again..... a great book to curl up with on a winters night. It took me a while to realise that the genetic output of both the original owner and his friend Jonathan continue to pop up and take ownership of the house, due in part to a couple of "wrong side of the blanket" babies in the first few chapters.
Full of wonderful characters from all aspects of the social scale, in different eras, Norah Lofts has a wonderful command of her people and their lives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Book, October 2, 2000
This review is from: Bless This House (Library Binding)
Not great, not mind bogling, but pleasant. This book starts with a love story in the late 1600s. It is in a house built by a man for the Queen Elizabeth, then it follows the house to the next owners accused of witchcraft, and on it goes until 1913. You experience the love of every owner, and the losses. this book has a lot of the same characters as Norah Lofts put in her book Parageters. So if you like one, you should like the other.

5.0 out of 5 stars geneologic eeriness, September 26, 1998
This review is from: Bless This House (Library Binding)
the history of a an English house, and its inhabitants/owners, over a period of several centuries. Amazing, and one could believe that a similar house's history could be true, from the original construction eons ago to a surprising ending as its owners travel ful circle in time.

I cannot understand why more of this prolific author's stories aren't reprinted-for sheer storytelling and charachters that are true to life, Norah Lofts is timeless. Bless This House is the chronicle of several generations of households witnessed by an English home from the time it was built through the past century.I believe that this book, and Gad's Hall, another of the author's stories, to be some of the best social commentaries true to their times. Engrossing on a cold winter's eve!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read for History Lovers, January 1, 2012

If you like old houses as I do, you'll love this book. Norah Lofts always delivers on story, too, as well as historical accuracy. This book takes you from the house being built all through the others who live in it up to the present day, or the seventies anyway! If you like this one, Lofts has written another house history trilogy: The Town House, The House at Old Vine, and The House at Sunset. The trilogy goes into much more detail about the owners of the same house through the ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE LIVES LIVED IN A HOUSE..., July 31, 2005
This review is from: Bless This House (Paperback)
This is a book to be savored by those who enjoy historical fiction. Beautifully written by a master storyteller, it centers around a beautiful house, Merravay, which was built during the Elizabethan era, and the lives of those who lived in it throughout the passing centuries.

There is a rich melange of personalities, conflicts, loves, and everyday twists that meld into the foundation of this house in which its inhabitants have seen so much personal and historical strife. Filled with memorable characters throughout the ages, this thoroughly engrossing book will keep the reader entertained until the very last page is turned.
