Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Continuing his series of Kinky Friedman mysteries, the off-beat author has his equally off-beat alter-ego attempting to track down the birth parents of an old friend.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

YA?Kinky Friedman, perhaps the only mystery writer who uses his own name for that of his fictional detective, is hired to find the birth mother of his friend Ratso (a.k.a. Larry Sloman). Among the obstacles in solving the case are the fact that Ratso doesn't tell him all he knows (including the death of a previous investigator) and that he brings yet another sleuth on to the case due to Friedman's lack of a P.I. license. Set in New York and Florida, God Bless John Wayne is an entertaining romp of a mystery. The pace is good and the characters are lively.?Clodagh Lee, Chantilly Regional Library, VA

So it has an element or two of foreshadowing that you can see a mile away. And he ain't Shakespeare. Still Kinky has irreverant fun all the way through an attempt on his life, a few bottles of Jameson, a case of Cuban cigars, two Zippos and a tap dance rendition of Swan Lake by the lesbian dance class overhead. It's fun. Fans will not be disappointed

More than once I've heard folks talk about God Bless John Wayne as one of the better Kinky entries, but I'm just not convinced. Everything from the premise to the by-the-books sleuthing seems both contrived and hurried.
For those not in the know, Kinky Friedman's fictional self is a wonderfully Texan detective living in NYC with his cat and a Sherlock Holmes head where he keeps his cigars. His dysfunctional drinking pals often need his advice/help...and here, Ratso needs Kinky to find his mother for him. After a little help and a few dead ends (the Kinkster in Florida?) we're off and running.
As usual the high points here are Kinky's many asides about music, drugs, women, coffee, Jesus, etc., and while he has never been better in the wit department I'm afraid that we've lost much of the charm of the storylines from earlier volumes. It's not so bad as to make me quit reading, but I just don't see this one as a stand-out.

So long as I had moderate pains tracing the plot of Kinky Friedman's 1995 novel GOD BLESS JOHN WAYNE through its over-involved framework and Weltanschauung Angst, I was more impressed than I now am after figuring things out.

I now rate its three principal elements thus:

(1) detective puzzle to be unraveled * * 1/2 stars

(2) lifestyle and English of Kinky Friedman * * * 1/2 stars

(3) narrative frame consisting of meditation on life of Robert Louis Stevenson plus an adoptive mother's thoughts on finding her son's birth mother * * * 1/2 stars.

Let me flesh out those three points a bit.

(1) detective puzzle to be unraveled * * 1/2 stars

Friedman takes 253 pages to present and solve a problem that G.K. Chesterton's sleuth Father Brown would have done brilliantly in 25. Adopted son Ratso/Larry Solman, also a major friend of Friedman, asks Kinky to find the unknown mother who gave Ratso birth 47 years earlier. After consulting two experienced investigators how to proceed, New York City dwelling Friedman and a few of his pals produce four or five good clues and trace Ratso's mother likely residence to a huge "castle" on the Hudson River. Along the way corpses pop up (nearly including Friedman!) showing that someone (a disgruntled co-heir to a $56 million fortune?) doesn't want Ratso to find his mother. That's it. That's the pure detection story.

(2) lifestyle and English of Kinky Friedman * * * 1/2 stars

Kinky Friedman, hero of GOD BLESS JOHN WAYNE, presents himself as a superior communicator, song writer and pretty good problem solver but with great empathy for the common folk who read People Magazine and love John Wayne movies and bumper stickers.

Kinky Friedman should have been elected governor of Texas; however, he wasn't. But, he is a brilliant man with a diverse sense of writing and humor. I have read everything he has written and while each is unique, each is enjoyable in its own way. God Bless Kinky Friedman.
