This review is from: Bless You, Dr. Woodward (Audio CD)
Boy, does this bring back memories! I picked this album up in 1978, in a cheapie cassette version in the cut-out bins. We played it a lot, as we did not own too many albums back then and this one was inoffensive and enjoyable in a low-key way....
Having heard it again now in 2005 for the first time in at least 25 years, it still holds up pretty well. Strong songwriting and performances, what you have here is Manassas-style boogie-rock, down to the Stephen Stills-like vocals, mixed with early Chicago, late-period Youngbloods, Jackie Lomax, and a bit of Butterfield Blues Band. They certainly did not deserve their obscurity, though I know Freebo and other band members continued to record as session guys for many more years. The cover really captures the music -- good for putting on on a sunny day, daydreaming and cruising, with no particular place to go. Better get it before it goes back to cut-out land again.... |
