5.0 out of 5 stars Finland's answer to the Damned & Moonspell, February 27, 2002

Damn, these guys have outdone the Damned! And they've out-moonspelled Moonspell! Errie Goth metal with deep DEEP baritonevocals. Their singer sounds like a cross between the Damned's Dave Vanian and Moonspell's Fernando with hints of Iggy and the late great Joey Ramone thrown in. (Hell, he even looks like Joey Ramone!) 69 Eyes' CD isn't easy (or cheep) to find but
for Goth metal fans it's more than worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars buy it!!!!!!, December 3, 2001

This review is from: Blessed Be (Audio CD)
The 69 eyes have managed to put together a CD full of melancholy, sadness but also black irony. The band's move towards the darker side of life in general is truly being felt in the keyboard induced atmosphere of the entire album. The lead singer, Jyrki69, has a deliciously deep voice, coming close to Andrew Eldritch's, yet more melodious. Against the background of pure gothic sounds mixed with beautiful keyboard melodies rendered by Bazie and Timo-Timo at the guitars, Archzie at the bass and Jussi69 at the drums, the songs give out a dark feeling of inspired sadness.
Don't even think you've heard it all once you've listened to the song Gothic Girl. While it gives an idea of the feel of the album, the whole thing is much darker and the lyrics have a tendency to verge on the morbid. Well, it is gothic after all.
The 69 eyes were known, before this album (and the previous Wasting the Dawn) as a rather sleazy rock band. The album Wasting the Dawn which came out in 1999 gave a glimpse of Blessed Be and of what the band was capable of. With the help of famous producer Johnny Lee Michael, they experimented with keyboard and melodies and it worked very well. Yet the gothic boys have not forgotten their rocker past and we get gleams of this on the latest album with the songs 30 and Framed in blood. More to the point though, the mix between the two styles is felt perfectly on Velvet Touch, my personal favourite, where both soft and hard sounds can be heard with a touch of disturbingly beautiful lyrics and melody. The song Heaven/Hell is also an example of the transition which the band seems to have experienced over the last two records.
Much more serious than anything before Wasting the Dawn and much more gothic than anything they've ever made, Blessed Be is something which the band is right to be proud of. Rarely have I seen an album which suits so well the attitude and looks of a band. Look at a picture of them and you will see what you should expect from the record.
Hard to find? Yes but long live the internet where you can order anything. Worth the search? Every minute of it. This is a must have and not only for lil' gothic boys and girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the greatest bands on earth, May 30, 2006
This review is from: Blessed Be (Audio CD)
I have never written a review before so please forgive me if it doesnt help you like 69 eyes any better. Blessed be is one of the best rock albums i have ever heard. Every song on blessed be blows most rock albums away. I hate reading critism about 69 eyes bc they used to be some sleezy glam band. Blessed be is a totally different sound and a new era for the 69 eyes. I have a dvd of them in concert called Helsinki Vampires and it is the best live dvd i have seen, and believe me i have seen alot. i could write some long azz review about how awesome they are, but i dont feel like writing a book. if you like type o negative then i would pick up blessed be, paris kills, and devils because i have never listened to any of my type o negative cds like i have these. 69 eyes makes you feel good and type o's music sometimes depresses me. if anyone knows bam margera you have probably heard some of his music on the cky dvds. he has some good taste in music. well he used to. I listen to radio bam every week and his new taste in music sucks in my opinion. him and 69 eyes are two of the best bands i have ever heard. 100% pure goth rock. finnish rock forever!!! im done...

5.0 out of 5 stars A little help for you?, June 19, 2006

Hi Folks.

I am a uk guy who happend to see this lot before i bought the music. I was in Finland for Ruisrock Festival and by the end of their set i was walking away singing to myself two tracks off the devils album they were promoting. Not bad for an 'Eyes' virgin. Or any band i see for the first time i think. If you want to know about this lot think Sisters of Mercy and the Cult. But forget the enevitable comparisons and listen to whats going on and you get tunes well written with atmosphere and passion. Great gig and great album for 'Devils' and will look forward to finally investing in the whole collection.

If anyone knows the band how about the Uk guys.... lol.

Peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars The cult of goth-rock, October 20, 2002
This review is from: Blessed Be (Ltd) (Audio CD)
The 69 eyes shares a lot of things with THE CULT,the first might be the look of the singer, the second might be that every album shows a new side of the band.
The cult started with goth-wave, went to Ac/dc rock, then FM rock and finally something much more personnal.
The first 69 eyes album-Bump and Grind-is more of a glam rock album,the second(savage garden)shows a attempt to mix goth-rockwith powerful rock'n'roll.
The third one-my favourite(Wrap your troubles in dream)is a blasting heavy rock'n'roll masterpiece.
Wasting the dawn(fourth)is just awful, the sound is [bad], it sounds like a bad Pantera album with a touch of Paradise lost.
And then came Blessed be!
A perfect mix of heavy metal and goth-rock.
The sound is perfect, clear and open but also heavy and raw, you can definitly tell that the69 eyes wanted that album to be a more easy-listening cd than the previous ones, but still and even if some songs made it to the radio stations, it doesn't sound like a pure business product...
If you like THE CULT, SISTERS OF MERCY, PARADISE LOST, CELTIC FROST this one is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Come on people this band is great, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Blessed Be (Audio CD)
This band is freaking great. I love the song Brandon Lee, its about the star, from the movie The Crow, it even has some quotes from the movie. You'll find yourself singing to it and thinking about it all day long until you go home to listen to it, it is worth the money and the wait for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars u must have it, November 6, 2002

This is a master piece from one of the best gothic bands on earth, this cd is one of the best cd I ever heard. With "framed in blood" starts a cd full of gothic riffs and the darkest voice you'll hear, I'm not saying buy it just download a few songs from kazaa or whatever and u'll c, I recommend "the chair" and "brandon lee" the best gothic songs I ever heard with phrases like "could there be a revenging angel left to bleed wanted the truth,
wanted the faith more than anything else in this world" or "just like the moon does we rise'n'shine'n'fall victims aren't we all!". The 69 eyes are definately one of the best gothic bands if not the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The 69 Eyes" move from glam metal to goth rock at full force!, January 2, 2011
By
Nikiforos V. Skoumas (Athens Greece, Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews

"Blessed be" is the 5th studio album by Finnish glam metal/goth rock band "The 69 Eyes" originally released in 2000. The line up features Jussi 69 (d), Bazie (g), Jyrki (v), Archzie (b) and Timo-Timo (g). In retrospect the "blessed be" is probably the coloses "69 Eyes" got to Goth rock as a subgenre.

The hard rock side of the band is definitely traceable as the guys do not neglect their riffs and guitar solos as well as the rocking rhythm section; still it is the production of the album, more than anything, that makes "Blessed be" a Gothic rock album: for that matter the clean instrumentations are brought up fron in the mix, delivering all the essential gothic melodies while Jyrki's vocals have become incredibly bass, perhaps overproduced on some songs sounding rather unnatural yet definitely adding to the gothic atmosphere.

The material on offer is actually very consistent in terms of songwriting and performance quality; still one would expet more tempo variety from one song to the next and perhaps a few more aggressive or hard rocking if you will, tunes that do not come by on "Blessed be". Favoritet tracks inclide: "Framed in blood", "Brandon Lee", "Velvet touch" and "Sleeping with lions".

Image wise the band has also moved away from the glamorous style, dressed in black with booklet band photos as well as cover artwork being barely visible on the CD version of the album. So cleary " The 69 Eyes" decided to place all the emphasis on the music throught this 5th album, putting style aside.
