Finally! A definitive health book for black women.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Blessed Health: The African-American Woman's Guide to Physical and Spiritual Well-being (Paperback)
Where has this book been? Thank you Dr. McCloud and Ms. Ebron for FINALLY getting a book to us that totally addresses the issues we women of color must face. But all women can use this book, but I'm glad it focuses on how serious the state of black women's health is. I read Body and Soul many years ago, but this is even better, with a ob-gyn writing it and in plain English. I really love the medical information but each chapter gives cool spiritual advice to get through whatever, medical or just daily life. They could have included more diagrams, though, but I still say five stars, ten stars! All women, all black women should get this book. ABsolutely complete, easy to read, informative and leaves you feeling like we can make a difference in our health. Right on, sisters!

I agree with the earlier message. This book has to be the best book on women's health and black womens' health i've read ever in my life. It's very easy to understand. I see my mother and sisters behavior in here. Okay, it sounds like me too. After reading this book i showed it to my ob-gyn doctor and he also felt it was excellent. He said more patients should do that inventory. I'm going to go meet the author Dr. McCloud tomorrow here. I already have her book, but maybe she'll sign it anyway.I like the authors "stories" that I can relate to easily, especially the one about not wanting to accept a condition; that sounds like me and my family. Instead they say to acknoweldge it and act accordingly. Those "prescriptions for your soul" are wonderful. And the section that deals with black parents and their kids talks about the same things Bill Cosby recently said. Not everything is whitey's fault with us, you know. This is a fantastic book, medical, spiritual and social. Every black woman we know should read it, and I read a lot of books. Good job.

I enjoyed this book very much so. I have a lot of medical books because it is good to have a second opinion even if it is just yours.
I wanted a book that targets black women and this one is just that... a great book

This book, BLESSSED HEALTH, was the first Black women's health book written by Dr. McCloud. Her book released in December 2010 is Living Well, Despite Catching Hell: The Black Woman's Guide to Health, Sex and Happiness, with the Foreword written by Denzel's wife, Pauletta Washington. Blessed Health deals with the medical-spiritual connection; the new book addresses the medical-psycho-social connection. Specifically, the stress Black women experience as result of social issues: negative imagery, low marriage statistics, some Black girls 'gone wild,' risk of STDs (and 'down-low') concerns. More than just 'access to care' and 'medical insurance,' some credence must go to the constant social stress/rejection Black women experience, and how that releases stress hormones, which can lead to continued obesity, hypertension and more. None of the other physician-authors are dealing with that.
Living Well's Health section includes info on fibroids, HBP, diabetes, pregnancy, menopause and other medical conditions (lupus, sarcoid, etc.). The Sex section encourages healthy sex (overcoming long-held hang-ups, preventing STDs, info on HIV) and also some love poems to treat your honey. [The poems are from the e-book Melodies of the Heart: Poems of Life & Love]. The Happiness section includes info about beauty--skin, hair, nails; also plastic surgery in private areas. Info on Black marriage stats, intimate partner violence and the relation of early painful experiences to ongoing stress today. BLESSED HEALTH together with Living Well, Despite Catching Hell: The Black Woman's Guide to Health, Sex and Happiness covers ALL the bases--medical, spiritual, also psychological and sociological concerns. LIVING WELL is medical advice (from a physician), also sexology, sociology, psychology, dashes of pop culture and hefty doses of personal responsibility. Dr. McCloud is an ob-gyn, a health expert consultant to the TJMS and other media and she lectures nationwide. The goal is to not be like other women, the goal is to be HEALTHIER Black women. Be Healthy, Be Blessed...and Live Well, ladies.

African American women need this book. We spend so much time taking care of others that we often forget about ourselves and health.
