Francesca and Martin, a skunk, originally met in a trash can awhile back:
He had startled her by rising from the garbage, wearing a cap of coleslaw and a mustache of yogurt. "Good evening, Miss," he said, remembering his manners. "My name is Martin. After the saint, Martin de Porres. My mother favored him. His statue was in the garden where we ate, so she named me, her firstborn, after him."
As the Celebration of Creatures service approaches, Francesca yearns to be there, but Martin warns her against it: "I don't think that we are meant to be included, Francesca. It's for the respectables, the cute and cuddlies. We are outcasts, my dear. They'll never let us in. Can't you just hear the humans shrieking as we walk down the aisle? They'd be fainting left and right."
Francesca and Martin find a creative way into the church--and what a sight they see! Kids and adults alike will treasure this new story about the value of all creatures, and will learn anew that all of creation has value, purpose, and God's blessing.

Barry Moser's work: A sight to behold!,

This review is from: The Blessing of Beasts (Hardcover)
A delightful story by Ethel Pochoki filled with the imagined settings and words of the animal kingdom. The engraved illustrations by Barry Moser show a master artist and illustrator at his best. Fine detail is revealed in every curving line wonderfully composed and skillfully executed in the challenging medium of block engraving. Subtle and vivid colors are used with sparing grace. A storybook to read again and again. A terrific combination of word and picture.

The illustrations are magnificent and the theme is wonderful. We have a blessing of the pets at our school on the feast of St. Francis. I thought the students would enjoy this story, but the ending is disappointing.

This review is from: The Blessing of Beasts (Hardcover)
This is a story of Francesca and Martin, a cockroach and a skunk who wonder if they will be welcome at the St. Frances Blessing of the Beasts. The elephants, zebras, pigs and more will be going, but will the priest and God welcome the two usual outcasts.
Whether you are religious or not, the story is lovely and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic.
