More About the Author

Spinning Straw, Weaving Gold: A Tapestry of Mother-Daughter Wisdom is Isabel Anders' sequel to her award-winning book Becoming Flame: Uncommon Mother-Daughter Wisdom.

Phyllis Tickle said in her Foreword to Becoming Flame: "What is here is the eternal feminine in its most sacred presentations; and all people, regardless of gender, yearn to know and be embraced by that hallowed fullness."

Lyn Sedmina, Christian Literature Editor of BellaOnline, calls the series: "A poetic perfection of biblically inspired values with a folklore feel."

"Isabel's dialogues are arranged in conversational form and embrace the collective wisdom of the feminine in short responses that approach Christian parables as well as Socratic dialogue in form and context. The author has included dialogues with questions at the end of the book for individual and group study." --Diane Marquart Moore.

The Daughter asked, "How do you spin all day, and see so little for your effort, and keep from discouragement?"

The Mother answered: "See this little square of texture and design? It is enough to wrap the universe in comfort and warmth."

The Daughter was perplexed. "How can this be?"

The Mother replied: "Even a few inches of loving intent can spread to span continents. Ask a ray of sun."

In Spinning Straw, Weaving Gold, Isabel writes of women, work, and wisdom, as "Woman's work and woman's wisdom come to us in literature, as in life, as two inseparable strands, braided within her very person."

***
Why do I write mother-daughter dialogues, and not mother-child? Most of the wisdom dialogues of old, after all, were between men: rabbis, abbots, masters of various traditions teaching male disciples one-on-one. There were reasons for this in their historical contexts. Though there are some writings by desert Mothers in the Christian tradition, they are few compared to their male counterparts.

First, I am a mother of daughters; I write about what I know. Second, I found that using a time-tested form of question and answer but between daughter and mother allows for open-ended responses by the readers themselves.

My emphasis in these writings is on exercising our gift of inner perception or intuition in concert with God's guidance, wise counsel, and the assent of our own heart. Mother-daughter dialogues are also an encouragement to readers to trust this process--that we too can knead reality and "make" wisdom between us like bread.

***
The Daughter loved the Spinning and Sewing Room, where the rough, carded wool was transformed into shimmering, useful thread.

"See," she said one morning to her Mother, pointing to the results of her effort, "our spinning teaches the wool to connect!"

"Yes," acknowledged her mother, "and it is our most basic lesson in life, as well, to learn how to Connect."

Good for someone with moderate faith walk and life. Light and easy read. Wanted something a little deeper, but good for a "coffee table" read when a visitor glances to pick up and can read short paragraphs.

Although this gift book is more appropriate for a Catholic, any Christian will find wisdom and inspiration in this collection of prayers, blessings, and quotes. This would be a good tool for couples to go through together in their daily devotions and prayers. The reflection questions also give a chance for couples to talk about things they may not always think about or talk about together. Nice book.

"Blessings and Prayers for Married Couples: A Faith Full Love" by Isabel Anders is a very timely book. Amid all the chaos and confusion found in every day life, this book can be a strength and blessing for any marriage and especially for any Christian marriage. In explaining "How to Use This Book", Anders says,"Choosing to plant and grow and nurture a 'faith full love' is a life-changing choice--a choice that provides an opening for God to work in specific, powerful ways in your marriage, in your family, and in your future"

Rather than a "marriage how-to book", this is a resource which enables couples to pray together and helps to strengthen their marriages to survive and thrive. As Anders has said, "I wanted it to be a way for couples of getting on the same page, literally, together with God." This is exactly what she has provided. Each chapter is based on different phrases of the marriage vows taken and given to each other. Included in each chapter are numerous prayers, poems, statements and meditation from a world of wisdom as well as her own meditative writings.

Not only will this be an excellent gift for any newly wed couple, but it will be a resource which any married couple will discover as an avenue enabling them together to strengthen their "faith full love' with God. In the pages throughout this book there is something for every couple as they build upon their marriage and accept God's grace and blessing upon their life together.

Divorce rates skyrocket with each passing generation. In a disposible society, marriage vows have become "just words" that are repeated in front of clergy or a justice of the peace. Bookstores contain shelves full of self-help books aimed at improving oneself and one's spouse. Even other Christian books that deal with marriage tend to ignore the basics.

In Blessings and Prayers for Married Couples, Isabel Anders takes seven lines from the marriage vow, presents her thoughts and offers quotes, stories, and scripture to be shared by spouses. The book, part devotional and part prayer manual, contains both contemporary and traditional prayers to be recited together.

In a frantic world where both spouses normally work and are entangled in juggling their jobs, family, church activities, and other obligations, Isabel encourages readers to slow down and remember the essence of their love. Each chapter contains questions which will help a couple reflect on their lives, their dreams and goals.

BLESSINGS AND PRAYERS FOR MARRIED COUPLES: A Faith Full of Love is a blessing in itself and emphasizes marriage as a sacrament that requires attention to prayer life. In this book, Anders advocates the daily act of affirming marriage vows through the process of collaborative worship. The book is an invitation for couples to regard their union as blessed, and Anders advises them to keep their hearts open for an enlightened relationship with each other, as well as with God, so that a clear spiritual perspective about the institution of marriage overarches their partnership.

Based on seven lines of the marriage vows, each chapter in BLESSINGS AND PRAYERS FOR MARRIED COUPLES presents a different part of the vows: "I take you to be my spouse...for better or for worse...to have and to hold...in good times and in bad...for richer and for poorer...in sickness and in health...all the days of our lives..." Anders encourages married couples to pray together at regular times - at mealtimes, bedtimes, and at family events. Her thesis that praying together is the strongest factor in producing long-term, successful marriages is undergirded by the results of a survey that determines only one percent of married couples divorce when they engage in mutual prayer.
Anders uses positive words to project the ideal for married life: love, listen, care, give, share, and support, and at the beginning of each chapter containing inspiring quotations and prayers, she presents a personal reflection about a part of the marriage vow. At the conclusion of each chapter, she includes questions that partners can use to reflect upon and discuss together.

Each chapter in this guide to prayer within the married life reflects the diligence and devotion of a committed Christian writer.
