Julie's World...,

This review is from: Bleu: Bande Originale Du Film (Audio CD)
This review refers to the "Trois Couleurs - Bleu" soundtrack CD(MK2/Virgin Music)....
"Blue" is the first in director Krzystof Kieslowski's beautiful trilogy-Three Colors Trilogy (Red / White / Blue) [Import](All-region)(Remastered). It is the story of Julie who has lost all that is dear to her, her husband and daugther, in a horrible auto accident. Composer Zbigniew Preisner captures Julie's journey from her withdrawal from life to her reawakening with a beauty to match the film. If you have seen the film, you will remember that Julie's husband Patrice, was a renowned composer. The album opens with a captivating choral rendition(5:13) of "Song for the Unification of Europe"(Patrice's version), and continues to mesmerize with a taste of each scene. The tracks are short but flow together to form this touching story through Preisner's exquiste compositions. Relive the journey with "Van Den Budenmayer-Funeral music", the wind, organ, and full orchestra versions, "Oliver's theme"(piano), and Julie's Version of the "Song for Unification of Europe",a wonderful 6:48. In track 19 "Oliver and Julie-Trial Composition", you will relive the moments of Julie's rebirth into the world as you can hear her speaking as she and Oliver rework the composition. Also included is a teaser from "Red"(the final part of the trilogy),"Bolero". There are 25 tracks in all, but is more like one continuous musical story. Directed by Wojciech Michniewski, the orchestra, including the beautiful flute(Jacek Ostaszewki)and Piano(Konrad Mastylo) is hypnotizing. The Silesia Philharmonic Choir directed by Jan Wojtacha, with soloists Beata Rybotycka and Elzbieta Towarnicka will take your breath away. If you have seen these films, you probably already know you can't get enough of them and this album is a beautiful way to relive the emotional journey. If you have not seen it but are a fan of Preisner(or want to get to know him), you will find this stirring music to be another one of his wonderful gifts to lovers of music. Th CD is an excellent quality. Put it on the stereo and just let it take you away. It includes a pamphlet that has the words from the choral section both in French and English..Here is a sample... "Though I speak with the tongues of angels, If I have not love... My words would resound with but a tinkling cymbal..." Get lost in Kieslowski's story, Preisner's music and Julie's world...and enjoy...Laurie

OK but Red is better,

The Blue, White, Red movie trilogy is fantastic, especially Red! And, of course, the music helped make it so, especially Red! But, this Blue CD, like most movie soundtracks, is too chunky - bits and peices of songs lifted from the movie and thrown together with barely a cohesiveness. Now if the music was taken from the movie and then worked into longer songs and arranged in a flowing order then it would be worth repeated listening. But how can you get emotionally drawn into a song that lasts only 1 minute!? Which is frustratingly followed by 5 or 6 more 30 to 50 seconds-long tracks. Don't get me wrong...there's some beautiful music here but they'd be more aptly called music "clips" not songs. If you want to collect a bit of the musical character of this trilogy without shelling out 45 bucks for all three I'd definitely recommend Red. Red DOES have a cohesiveness - at least enough of one. My favorite music from the movie is from when the gorgeous Irene Jacob/her character is floating down the runway at the fashion show. Well, this bit of music is revised, reworked, and repeated through out maybe half of the album - which, even though they are still only 2-4 minute tracks, allow you to "get into" the music. And the other tracks that make up the rest of the album are quite nice, too.

Music to fill your heart.,

Music is an essential part of Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy. It not only serves as a background for the story, but it sometimes becomes the characters themselves, or what they are feeling at a particular moment. Zbigniew Preisner's soundtrack makes you feel as if you are one of the characters. Sometimes the music is quiet, almost meditative, sometimes it is grandeur, exciting, and it always fill your heart. Preisner's talent makes this first part of Kieslowski's trilogy one of the most beautiful and striking moments of recent film music history.

Exquisite,

This music skates that exquisite line of grief between maudlin and madness. Julie's composition is brilliant, though the soundtrack allows you to explore other versions, other views. Much as the movie pulls you through Julie's changing understanding of her husband, her lover, and her new life, the music explores multiple points of view on a repeating theme. Listening to this soundtrack brings back every moment of the film for me, reminds me of the parts that moved me, saddened me, gave me hope. There's also a little sneak at the music for Red, which I believe I'll buy next. Simply lovely. A gem.

I concur with the other reviewers here. Kieslowski's films are defined by the music, and part of immersing yourself in any film (and in particular in Kieslowski's body of work) music is key. The music for all three soundtracks of the trilogy is perfect, sweeping, and dramatic. Listening to the soundtracks again produces chills and goosebumps and evokes the emotions and images of the films (which, apart from White, were arguably masterpieces.)

The music is the important part of each of Krzysztof Kieslowski's movies. When the music becomes the subject of the movie it is like a collage of sounds, colors, images and words. Very illustrative but can live its own life too. It is real music not just an easy-listening background.

mostly highs, but hits some lows,
This review is from: Bleu: Bande Originale Du Film (Audio CD)
First heard this playing in a restaurant in Krakow and was even more enchanted when I discovered who the composer and director of the film are. Very theatrical compositions. Sometimes repetitious, but an amazing example of Preisner's work. Some of the pieces forcibly removed me from my chair and agitated me emotionally. Not for the faint-hearted, definitely for the music lover.

Best music by a 'composer' in a film,
By
This review is from: Bleu: Bande Originale Du Film (Audio CD)
The first time I saw the film "Trois Couleurs: Bleu", the music simply blew me away. I have seen other films, notably "Mr Holland's Opus", which aimed to feature a simply amazing piece by a great composer - however "Bleu" is the only film I have seen where the music lived up to the reputation of the character in the film. The highlight of this CD is the "Song for the Unification of Europe", which is the feature piece of the film. This song is fantastic - a very passionate and beautiful piece, and the way it sets the text of 1 Corinthians 13 to the beautiful msuic is a highlight of the film and of this soundtrack. The CD is worth buying simply for this song. That said, the rest of the soundtrack is also fantastic - the music is quite simply beautiful, and if you enjoyed the film or if you simply like deeply emotional music, this CD is worth buying. The only detraction I noted is that all of the pieces are quite short - the "Song for the Unification of Europe" being the longest at a bit over 5 minutes. While this is not a problem in itself, and it does present the music as it appears in the film, I find it a little annoying at times and would have liked it if longer versions of some of the pieces were performed for the soundtrack.

Magnífico disco,
This review is from: Bleu: Bande Originale Du Film (Audio CD)

I agree with all the previous reviews that the music is phenomenal. I sit there listening and it seems as if I am transported to a whole different world. The music is strong and emotional. For the one who loves the movie and music (in general), you won't regret it.
