Editorial Reviews

Review

"This fast paced, highly descriptive adventure involving a wide cast of characters is an ideal opportunity to draw in new readers. This is an good sign of things to come." - Rick Brown, Examiner.com - 4/5 stars

From the Author

This book came out of a love of steampunk and a desire to push it further. With so much going on in our own high modernist era, I thought writing fantasy in a setting like this would be a lot of fun. And it was.

I wrote it in a fast-paced pulpy style because I personally can't get excited about long fantasy epics most of the time, and because it suits the era. The idea was to make it visually appealing, exciting and vivid while still maintaining a certain intellectual depth.

I loved this book. It's simply brilliant. I have to admit that this genre really isn't my thing, but once I started reading I couldn't put the book down!

When I started this novel I wasn't quite sure where it was going because there seemed to be several different genres happening at the same time. After a couple of chapters though, I'm glad I kept reading.

The story takes place on an arid, war-stricken world where natural magic is slowly being supplanted by mechanism and oil production. Capra Jorassian is an armed forces deserter who is brought, against her will, into an il-fated mission across the scarred and blighted desert known as "The Hex". She is being pursued by rival armed forces, who are on the same mission but have past personal grudges against her.

The different intrigues takes place against a very well-constructed world at the beginning, but then as the book progresses the descriptions get more intense as events get more and more bizarre. Clock towers, metal giants, plains of shattered machinery, armies of shadow warriors ... the stakes just keep getting higher.

Throughout the novel, the characterization and storytelling are both solid. Some of the dialog sounds a little bit like 21st-century formal conversation, but maybe that's just me. All in all, an intriguing work of speculative fiction and I'd like to know if there's going to be a sequel.

I liked this book. It reminded me of a western - steam punk, Indiana Jones meets Hellboy, except for Indiana Jones is a woman. I liked the main character, you don't meet too many fantasy women protagonists! She was spunky, smart and wears a suit like cat woman. I also liked the back story but wanted that explained to me a bit better. I thought the story was entertaining and at the end I wanted more. Suggestion for a prequel?

Oil vs. Magic

A new twist on the conflict of the traditional against new technology in a world torn apart by war.

A fun debut novel, with very interesting world building. This is much grittier than a steam punk novel, and I like the idea of calling it 'Diesel Punk', but I haven't come across this genre before. I rather like the main character; Capra is an interesting woman with compelling internal problems. As a soldier I liked her motivations for what was occurring within the world.

The book started somewhat slowly, and the magic, vihs, wasn't sufficiently explained for me. I was intrigued by using art as a magical outlet though, I found the artist's egotism and perspective realistic and compelling.
