From School Library Journal
Grade 9-12–Blind Beauty (Dutton, 2001) brings together a determined young woman, a horse full of heart, and the exciting world of the Grand National Steeplechase. The novel evokes memories of Bagnold's National Velvet, but K. M. Peyton's story follows Tessa, an impulsive, independent, horse-loving teen with 21st century problems. Though the story opens during Tessa's childhood on an Irish horse farm, most of the action revolves around her years in England where Tessa and her mother live with her rich, repressive stepfather. When the rebellious girl is bounced from her third boarding school, she's sent down the road to work on a horse farm run by a down-to-earth family and staff. That's where she becomes passionately attached to her dream horse, Buffoon. After struggling to survive a stay in a girl's detention center after she stabs her stepfather, she works to win respect as a jockey and to overcome what looks like the loss of Buffoon. Through it all, Tessa is sustained by her innate drive and natural talent with horses. By story's end, she and Buffoon are entered in the Grand National, and Tessa has found an equally spunky man to love. Narrator Nicki Paull reads this Australian import with crisp vivacity and authentic emotion, and the sound quality is good. This will be a welcome addition in libraries serving horse-loving girls.–Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CT

Four-year-old Tessa is heartbroken when her parents divorce and she must leave Shiner, the blind horse that her father bred. She's had a difficult life and has no interest in anything until she encounters the ugly but great racehorse Buffoon, who happens to be Shiner's colt. Narrator Nikki Paull captures the difficult and angry Tessa and everyone she meets on the road to becoming a relative rarity--a female jockey. The story's horse lore remains interesting for most listeners, thanks to Paull's thoughtful delivery. Horse lovers old and young will enjoy it.
