Not Meat's Best Work,
This review is from: Blind Before I Stop (Audio CD)
Before I start let me say that I am a huge Meat Loaf fan. I really find it kind of painful to write a bad review. This album is what happens when an artist leaves the formula that has served him so well and goes to far in another direction. Meat Loaf sings loud, anthemic, bombastic and passionate songs. There is very little of that here. It sounds as if he succombed to the temptation to adopt an "80's" sound. This certainly works for some performers but Meat Loaf is NOT one of them. Now having said all this I don't wish to give the impression that the recording is a complete waste. I would have liked to have given this album 2.5 stars but that is not an option. There are a couple of highlights on this mostly mediocre effort. "Special Girl" is a catchy little ballad even if it does rely a little...or a lot...on the 1980's pop formula. Also, "Rock n Roll Hero" is the one song that does try to capture the true Meat Loaf sound and style. If you are a big Meat Loaf fan I do recomend that you have this album in your collection. If you are new to Meat Loaf's music let me recomend that you listen to "Bat Out of Hell" first.

Variety,
This review is from: Blind Before I Stop (Audio CD)
I'm a big Meat Loaf fan. This album is a real departure from his previous albums but I think it works well. The songs are not bombastic like most of the Jim Steinman penned classics. Meat still rocks when needed. My personal favourite is a ballad, "A Man and a Woman" followed closely by "Rock and Roll Mercenaries."
There is a very definite 80s feel to the album, and that is to be expected. I would be bitterly disappointed if every album sounded exactly alike. If you are new to Meat Loaf, check out Bat out of Hell. If you are already a fan, Blind Before I Stop is a good addition to your collection as it shows the variety Meat is able to perform.

Great 80's meat loaf,

Meat Loaf still managed to make great album during the 80's. These albums were no where near as epic as the Bat albums but what else is? This is a very well done Meat album.
