Book Description

2008
BLIND MOLES is a small book. Using simple childlike drawings in its brief 12 pages, Blind Moles draws an alternately dark, funny and sweet metaphor about stumbling through life: where we make mistakes, occasionally get hurt by others, sometimes even hurt our friends despite ourselves, while holding on to what matters most in the end. It's a love story. It's a thick book. It's a great gift for readers of all ages.

The first time I read this book to my fourth grade students they had laugh. They found the story and the pictures amusing. Then I posed the question, "What do you think this book is about?" This led to a lengthy discourse and the realization of the many lessons contained within the simplistic structure of Blind Moles. It has been three years, and I need new copies because I have continued to use Blind Moles to teach themes ever since.

A life's miniature July 5, 2011
I recently came across this book at a Museum of Contemporary Art, and cannot get it off my mind. The chunky cardboard pages and childlike drawings are utterly enjoyable, and the poetic story surprisingly deep. This book manages in its 12 short pages to flow from a light and comedic mood, to a darker representation of life's turmoils, and ends with a message of survival and companionship. This book may be best suited for an artfully minded adult with a sense of humor, but I could also see children loving it as well.
