Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Legal thrillers involving corrupt lawyers and lowly associates who learn too much inevitably invoke comparisons to John Grisham's The Firm, but Kopp's fifth intrigue (after Final Justice) falls well short of that mark. When multi-millionaire Oak Greythorne dies of a drug overdose, Louis Brisbane, the executor for Greythorne's estate, taps attorney Emma Davis to work on Greythorne's trust. At first, Emma, a newcomer to the Chicago firm of Franklin & Holland, puzzles over the plum assignment, but she quickly becomes caught up in preparing Greythorne's property for sale. Meanwhile, Emma and her well-connected neighbor search for "Mr. Right." A chance meeting pairs Emma with handsome architect Flynn Fielding, and together the two expose the unholy alliance between Brisbane and building contractor Tommy Corona, a stereotypical Mob thug. Predictable plotting and insipid prose ("He was about six three, slender but well built. Wearing dark jeans and a black T-shirt, he was very nice looking") tarnish this tepid thriller, and an excess of inessential plot details make it slow going at times. Though a spark-free romantic subplot fails to shed light on Kopp's protagonists and their motivations, readers will likely see the book's weak suspense thread through to its elaborate and improbable end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick read. Not very sophisticated. A little light reading., March 6, 2006
This review is from: Blind Trust (Paperback)
The other reviewers are right. This book is both compelling and sophomoric. The writing style is simplistic. The conversations are stilted. But, beneath all of that is a likable story with likable characters about a fairly simple conspiracy to commit fraud on legal trusts administered by this Chicago law firm.

Somehow, with all of the negatives of simplistic plot devices and poor character development, the story made me want to know how it ended and that has to get some credit here.

Not a great read but good enough for a grade of C.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kids' Stuff, November 3, 2003
By
This review is from: Blind Trust (Paperback)
If you are looking for a souffle-light read,
'Blind Trust' should be at the top of your list.
But if it's a legal thriller you're after,
look elsewhere.

The writing in 'Blind Trust' can be described
as juvenile at best. The book seems like a
Mills & Boons wannabe, stereotyping silly
girlish infatuations with good-looking guys.
It is also peppered with some of the cheesiest
lines in print. Depending on the edition you
have, here are three of them (in quotations)...

PAGE 133 - When a character was pleased that
the lead character agreed with him, he began
"pumping his fist in the air".

PAGE 158 - When the lead character, who was
afraid of heights, looked down the window at
the coaxing of her HANDSOME boyfriend, he said,
"I knew you could do it. I am so proud of you!"

PAGE 333 - When the lead character was being
rescued from a crane, her friend shouted,
"Hang on, kiddo! You're doing great!"

'Kiddo'?!? Gawd, all the characters here are
GROWN UPS!

I finished the book in a desperate anticipation
of a twist. But none came. The bad guys' identities
were revealed right within the first few chapters
of the book, and... that's it.
No surprises, no twists.

This book will definitely make impressionable
girls below 12 very happy. For the rest of us adults,
STEER CLEAR!
