This review is from: Blinded by the Shining Path: Romulo Saune (Trailblazer Books #37) (Paperback)
We have a fondness for South America, especially Peru and Bolivia so I was excited to read this book aloud with my 10 year old. While I have been to Lima and Ayacucho (mentioned in the book), I am not well educated on the Shining Path so cannot speak to the accuracy of the story.

I had read the description but missed a subtitle area on the back stating that this book introduces readers to Christian heroes. So if you do not want a book that mentions religion, then perhaps this book is not for you.

That being said, we thoroughly enjoyed this book (from the library) and I was disappointed to see you can only purchase it used on Amazon.

The story touches on many things from geography to family ties to the simple life of Peruvian Indians. The issue carried throughout the book is the boy's struggle of who to believe: the Christians, the government, or the shining path. Who is right? Which cause should he join? Are the groups really any different from one another? I see this as an excellent book introducing a discussion on values and politics and how one decides which side they will be associated with. It really should be back in print.
