Sir Arthur Bliss was a great composer. He's remembered in England for serving as music director of the BBC during WII and also becoming Master of the Queen's Music. Both were very big honors for Bliss, but during his lifetime his music never attained the kind of success that Britten or Vaughan Williams received. Bliss also studied with Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music.

"A Colour Symphony," which in my opinion, receives it's best performance to date with Vernon Handley and Ulster Orchestra, is an outstanding piece of music. I've heard all of them: Hickox (Chandos), Wordsworth (Nimbus), Lloyd-Jones (Naxos), and Groves (EMI) and none of them touch Handley's performance and I doubt it ever will.

The other performances on this recording are "The Enchantress," which is a vocal piece and I'm not too crazy about it. The "Cello Concerto" gets a great performance with Rafael Wallfisch on cello. What I don't understand is why didn't Chandos pair the symphony with Bliss' "Checkmate Suite" like the original recording was released with? Anyway these are small gripes. The audio quality (remastered in 24-bit) is fantastic. The performances from the Ulster Orchestra (Ireland) are also top-notch.

Fans of obscure British composers will want to pick this release up as soon as possible. 4 1/2 stars
