From Booklist

Pastry chef Serafina Bliss Wilde moves to Santa Fe to lend a hand to her aunt Pauline, but it’s Sera who ends up getting help repairing the damage her egomaniacal ex-boyfriend, Blake, also a chef, has done to her career and self-esteem. Pauline, a renowned women’s sexuality expert, convinces Sera to turn her shop, Pauline’s House of Pleasure, into a bakery with a back room that caters to more carnal satisfaction. The irony is that Sera has never experienced climax, but if Pauline and her friends, “The Back Room Babes,” and the handsome landlord, Asher, have anything to do with it, that will soon change. When Blake shows up in town to try to destroy Sera’s newfound success and confidence, it all ends up getting played out in an epic, televised bake-off. Pastries and sex toys make for an unusual and entertaining mix in this tasty debut novel. The romance and revenge are as sweet as the luscious descriptions of Sera’s confections. --Aleksandra Walker

I absolutely loved this madcap, sassy, fast-paced romantic adventure--with lots of dessert for dessert. It seemed so cinematic--the best kind of thinking woman's rom-com. We should all have an Aunt Pauline who challenges and liberates us...who lives in fabulous Santa Fe, providing a fairytale escape from our usual lives, especially when they go super-pear-shaped. This book is very modern, and acknowledges the unique dilemmas American women in the early 21st century have to tangle with in order to feel good and find ourselves.

With a loveable and sometimes cringe-worthy heroine reminiscent of Bridget Jones, and a supporting case as wild and untamed as the Santa Fe backdrop, this story of family, food, and redemption will give you hours of reading satisfaction! Although our protagonist Sera has faced the heartbreak of addiction and a failed relationship (which leads to a failed career), the tone of the story stays upbeat and humorous. Ms. Fields maintains a level of authenticity while balancing laugh-out-loud comedy and drama. All in all, I recommend it...preferably with some chocolate cookies because the sweets in this book will make your mouth water!

Fun, Cute Read!!! Perfect for the Holidays.
A great book to escape with on your next long flight or relax with by the beach. The quirky characters in the magical setting of Santa Fe makes this a very unique read. You'll be rooting for the main character and craving her baked goods the entire way through. Looking forward to the author's next novel!!

Excellent book; well-written with a good eye for detail. Ms. Fields has also clearly done her research, and most importantly, has a gift for creating quirky characters -- not just Aunt Pauline but a whole passel of supporting characters, including an irritable piemaker and a number of Pauline's friends, aka The Back Room Babes. Recommended.

Bliss is a delicious, delightful, sensuous and hilarious tale of reinvention, discovery and fulfillment (carnal and otherwise). Packed with quirky characters and brilliant wit, Serafina's journey to affirmation and flourishing is deeply moving, Ms. Fields light touch notwithstanding. As Serafina recovers from the vitriol of a vindictive and callous celebrity chef ex-lover, she flies to rescue her ostesibly grieving Aunt Pauline in Santa Fe, New Mexico, only to find herself rescued by this same memorable Aunt and her cadre of remarkable "Back Room Babes." Serafina finds real love, and a new life (not to mention sexual fulfillment) in a magical town that brings healing and second chances.

A once-famous (now infamous, thanks to the evil ex) pastry chef in New York City, Serafina is offered the opportunity to open her own shop in Santa Fe, through the generosity of her wonderful Aunt. Aunt Pauline suggests Serafina convert the storefront Pauline has been renting from luscious landlord Asher Wolf into a bakery, provided Serafina keep the back room as-is: a backroom devoted to quite carnal earthly delights, and to the Back Room Babes who meet there to support one another in love, life, and sexual discovery. The resulting combination is unexpected, and wonderful. And this, along with a budding relationship with the aforementioned Wolf, offers Serafina a rebirth, and a defence against the continued persecution of her ex, who reappears in Santa Fe, with the object of ruining her new found happiness. And Serafina's response, and the response of the community that supports her, to this unwarranted attack, is beautiful, moving, and perfect.

Ms. Fields is a true, real talent, with much promise. I very much look forward to more offerings from her able pen.

Love chocolate? Love cakes, cupcakes and, ah, yes, mousse? Love stories where the heroine triumphs over staggering odds, mostly of her own making? Love stories where the villain (in this case a sleaze-bag ex-lover) gets his just . . . um . . . desserts? Love stories with sparkling language, frequent belly laughs and an occasional sweet cry? Love stories set in exotic places (here, Santa Fe, New Mexico) described in such vivid detail you want to hop on the next plane that's headed there? Love stories you just read and read and can't put down?

Well, then. You should immediately snag a copy of Hillary Fields' new novel, BLISS, find a comfortable seat somewhere in a quiet corner where no one will interrupt you, on a day you have absolutely nothing else you have to do. Then turn to page one and begin. I predict it will be like taking a first bite from the loveliest of chocolate cakes -- you won't be able to stop till all of it is gone.

Yes, I liked it but there were awfully long stretches where Bliss was just beaten down by her former boss and obsessed and obsessed and obsessed....well, you get the point. Not hard to believe he was a jerk but not so credible that he expended so much effort on destroying her. Also, as dramatic as the (too-long) denouement scene was, it wasn't credible that.....let me stop so as not to spoil it. Fun to read!

I have to admit that I loved the part about the Ten Thousand Waves spa outside of Santa Fe. My husband took me here during a visit to Santa Fe and this Japanese-themed bathhouse was a highlight of the entire trip. Just marvelous, and beautiflly described in the book.

More About the Author

Enamored of women's fiction from the time she could read, Hilary began her first novel at age sixteen, and has written three historical romances under a just-slightly-different name, one of which won RT Book Club's award for Best Historical Romantic Adventure. After years of being a tough-as-noodles New Yorker, life took a ride on art's coattails, and she followed the heroine of her new novel out to the sunny southwest. She currently resides in Santa Fe with her three slightly sulky kitties, and is finishing up her next novel, LAST CHANCE LLAMA RANCH, set in Northern New Mexico and jam-packed with wooly good times. When not writing, she's usually elbow deep in bread dough, balls of yarn, or huffing and puffing up one of the local hiking trails.
