5.0 out of 5 stars Bliss-Enchantment-Wonder
I find this chant to be so deeply moving. It takes me to a higher level in my devotions and worship. The beautiful melody, the subtle insertions of a clear, high soprano, the sounds of a guitar, the blending melodies of alto and tenor voices work a magical change in your mind and engage the soul and you find yourself "there"--in the Presence of Divine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did not work for me
The "om nama shivaya" chant is great, but there is a flute solo intertwined with it that sounds like a jazz piece -- and is totally disruptive for me, completely breaks the meditative mood. I don't know why Gass added it. A pity, since so many of his other albums are great for meditation.

Om Namah Shivaya has soothing, energized chants that bring meaning to the Hindu scriptures emphasis on the sound and the power it carries. Truly mesmerizing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Upbeat and pleasant, August 4, 2008
This review is from: Bliss: Om Namah Shivaya II (Audio CD)
This is a "faster" version of the Master Chant that I am used to hearing. It is lighter in tone and quicker in rhythm, but is still pleasant to listen and chant to. In the original version the Guru chants first and then the people answer back the chant; whereas, in this version, the voices sing continually and we can all sing along if we wish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal mantra for western sensibilities, July 13, 2009
This review is from: Bliss: Om Namah Shivaya II (Audio CD)
Westerners seeking to mind the spiritual gold of Hinduism frequently do not consider the difficulties in such
aspirations. Consequently, it is not uncommon for a guru or sage to suggest such a person devote themselves more to their native spiritual tradition. A Hindu for example, used to the intonations of mantras, would likely find the recitations of a catholic mass alien. Nonetheless, if he understood the intent and the meaning of the words he could be inspired or feel peace.

While many think alterations in the sounds and meters of mantras into forms more "natural" is somewhat heretical, there is a place for interpretations like those of Robert Gass and Deva Premal: they make the beauty and power of mantra accessible to the westerner--and in this case, the former succeeds wonderfully. Both "Om Namo Shivaya" and "Om" as interpeted by Gass transcend the limits of culture and give the listener a definite appreciation of the power and beauty of mantra to do exactly what they were created to do in the first
place: to bring a light into the darkness.

This review is from: Bliss: Om Namah Shivaya II (Audio CD)
This is one of the best meditation chanting cds there is. I was in a workshop about 20 years ago, and they played it. I loved it and have been looking on and off for a copy since then. My thanks to Amazon!

This album is an extraordinary companion for meditation, yoga, reflection, relaxation - in short, for bliss. It's repetition of this ancient and timeless chant provides a musical context for working with your own consciousness. When I listen to it, I feel held - and so, I believe, will you.
