5.0 out of 5 stars NOT for the whole family!, February 22, 2009

I bought this specifically for Peter Wingfield's performance, which doesn't disappoint! He's naked and tied up, what more could you ask for? Just so you are aware, this IS erotica. The naughty tales are well written, for the most part, and several are very good. The entire series was written and produced by women, FOR women.

2.0 out of 5 stars Impotent..., August 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bliss: Season 3 (DVD)
I saw Bliss Season 1 many years ago and remembered the stories as much more erotically tense then what Season 3 seems to have on offer. I admit, there maybe a wide divide between my idea of a tantalizing fantasy versus that of somebody else's... Different strokes for different folks... However, even if you try to ignore the stories and focus on other aspects of the production, you are left wanting.

Each of the eight, 30 min segments, takes place maily outside the bedroom, with some timid erotica involved at some point (there is little to no actual nudity). The direction largely consists of steady, wide-angle camera shots that alienate the viewer from the action; the music seems borrowed from a porn flick, and the acting is basic at best. I agree with other reviewers that "Tying Up Gerald" is the most interesting of all episodes, mainly due to the stand-out acting skills of the male lead (Peter Wingfield). His on-screen charisma helps "sell" the story of a middle class wife reluctantly discovering the pleasures of S&M. His performance is the sole reason for the rating bump-up to two stars overall.

As for the erotic scenes: we see faces with perfect make up and not a hair out of place; we see bodies with all muscles arched in the perfect position at the perfect time, not a pearl of sweat in sight... Well, this is sex in a sterilized, "control freak" Universe that is nowhere near where MY fantasies live... Whatever happened to sex being unrestrained, messy, and fun?!

I say, Bliss writers/directors need to practice more ;o) and come back with something better! I still love the concept of Bliss: erotica by women, for women; just not its execution... Regrettably, I have nothing to recommend in its place. Well made erotica remains elusive...

5.0 out of 5 stars Canadians have more fun than the rest of us...., August 3, 2009

I watched Bliss: Season 3 in its entirety, last night. As with the first two seasons, I was pleasantly surprised by the knack the writers have for creating stories with just the right balance of fantasy/eroticism with plot realism, e.g. female characters with credible emotional issues. I hope, hope, hope that this series will go on for a good long while. We "women of a certain age" need this kind of outlet....
