5.0 out of 5 stars Blister
Blister is a great book. Blister was so brave, and she always looked on the bright side. She took control of her own life, and it made me want to be just like her. It was one of the best books I've ever read. It was wonderful, stupendous, and just plain great. I read it over and over again.

This book, is ok, I guess. I love my school library, and I was just browsing and picked it up and started reading. I was in 6th grade, then, and now I am in 8th. I used to think that that was the coolest book ever. Now that I read it again, I think it is a lot less. This book entertained me greatly. I could relate to her struggles to fit in. But i think that this book...

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm simply astounded, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Blister (Paperback)
I read this book because it was required in one of my classes since they wanted to give us something kind of light and fluffy to read. This book was not light and fluffy. It makes me cringe with how Blister conducts herself, and since I, a mere 15 year old, can't stand the attitude the main chacter puts out because it is so flat out rude and disrepectful I don't think anyone else could be able to stand it. This book is shallow to a new extreme. the chacters seem so one dimensional to me it makes me want to cry. I love books ,and I love reading and I think this book would have been a whole lot better if the author would have put some meat on the proverbial bones of this story so it didn't read like soda that's been left out: flat, stale, and leaves a bad foul taste in your mouth.
Needless to say, I don't reccomend this book to anyone who would like something more than a shallow whiny preteen who thinks she has it bad.

I used to think that that was the coolest book ever. Now that I read it again, I think it is a lot less. This book entertained me greatly. I could relate to her struggles to fit in. But i think that this book sends a good message to young girls (i.e. Self-Esteem, confidence) but also, not good ones (i.e. Lying, stealing, changing to fit in). So I think that people should read it and choose their opinion. Good morale? Bad morale? You choose :)

This book was okay. It was kind of unrealistic, though. First, Alyssa decides to change her name to Blister for no reason, then she decides to steal her dad's girlfriend's clothes. It was weird. I wouldn't spend my money on it.

Still born baby sister, Dad's affair, Mom's depression. and divorce. These topics can be interesting for adults, but this book offers no wisdom for children to understand. I wouldn't recommend this unless you are ready to explain them to your child by yourself.

The main character is Alyssa Reed also know as Blister. She is ten years old and she has red hair like a bright red apple. She has freckles, and blue eyes.
I really, truly did not like this book. I didn't like it because it had no mystery in it. I would though recommend this book to another person, if they like reality. This book is a really good book for people who like to read this sort -of thing.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Blister (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading this book, but I was disappointed that her dad got a new girlfriend. I was surprised that she stole the clothes! But I liked the way she overcame the troubles in her life. It helps girls to know that they can get over disappointments and be happy with the way things are even if things aren't perfect. If you liked this book, I would recommend reading Because of Winn Dixie. Haley 9 years old.

Alyssa Reed is the only child with her parents Jack and Mary Reed. Though, that changes when Mary is going to have a baby. Her name is Lila Rose. They have a room and go to the hospital everyday. Alyssa feels lonely and is recieving no attention from her parents. Her grandma, Daisy G. is a dancer. The baby died and everything changed. Her mom is heartbroken. They move to New Haven and Alyssa tries to make new friends. She's very upset that she is not controlling her own life. Everything is happening lightning fast. Her dad moves and her mom never gets out of bed. Her dad has a girlfriend named Tamara. and Alyssa is angry at her father for leaving them alone. Alyssa then changes her name to Blister to show that she is in control and power of her life. Will Blister make new friends? Will her mother feel better and ever be happy again. Read the book Blister and you will find out for yourself. I enjoyed the book Blister because many people can relate to one of the characters from the book. This story happens in everyday life all the time. A baby dies around the world every minute. Of course the family is dissapointed and upset. They had it all planned out to have a baby and all their plans were now gone. I can imagine how that feels. It takes a long time to get over that loss just like in the book Blister. Overall, Blister is a great and relaxing book that girls would enjoy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blister is a must read book!!!!!, January 24, 2006

My book Review

Everyone should read the wonderful book Blister By: Susan Shreve. This is a touching story about a young girl named Alyssa. She goes through many changes, and gets so sick of everything, including her name. It's easy to relate to Alyssa (Aka Blister) and all of her changes. This book will make you laugh, and you will understand what she's going through. It's great!
The Characters are believable and funny. The Main character Alyssa gets sick of just about everything. So she decides to change the things she can in it, starting with her name. She decides Blister is her new name. She has many feeling for other characters in this book. For example she feels revenge on her father because he cheated on her mother. Also she feels happy when she's around her new friends, even though the get her into trouble! When you read this book you can almost feel like you're living her life. I was hooked on her funny, yet caring ways the minute I picked up the book!
The theme of the story was basically a feel of revenge yet sorrow. Although the theme varies you could always tell those two main themes. I thought the theme was revenge because the fact that her father cheated Blister wanted revenge. To get revenge she went through her fathers belongings and stole things like jewelry. But yet there was a feeling of sorrow for her father because of his long nights working at the bowling ally. I thought that revenge was the easier theme to pick out because by the second chapter you could already see that she liked getting revenge. She only took revenge on people who "deserved it" according to her. I think theme played a major role in this book and it wouldn't have been as interesting with out it.
The setting made it seem more interesting to know where everything was going on.
The being of the book starts out at her former home (Which you will learn about if you read the book) but varies thought the book. She goes to a new school, and finds a lot of friends...so she thinks. She also begins to try things she wouldn't normally do. For example she decides to try out for cheerleading, because supposedly that's what all the "Cool people" did. She wasn't acting like herself as if she were at her old school. She talked to her mother about the cheerleading; her mother thinks it's a good idea. But her father officially decides it's not for her. The setting showed her emotions for being in certain spots, like her fathers apartment. She wasn't comfortable there because it just didn't feel like home. The setting also played a just as important role as the theme! I really wanted to keep reading after I knew how the setting varied, there were interesting and fun to read!
Overall this was a wonderful book. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a great story. But I would strongly recommend this book to a kid with divorced parents. They would understand her pain and feeling for revenge. Basically I think this is a good book for all 6th or 7th graders to read because some of the words are really long and hard to pronounce. I read this book 4 times and I still love it! I know you will to if you read it! So go to the library and Check it out now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Elastic girl!, January 13, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Blister (Paperback)
Susan Shreve's Blister is a serious, dramatic fiction with twists of humor.

Blister is about a girl named Alyssa Reed whose baby sister dies. Trying to overcome the loss, her mother stays in bed all day sobbing, and her father moves out with a new girlfriend. Alyssa's way of coping is hilarious. Blister is tragic, but it is also funny. It is just like in our everyday lives; some days go wrong and some are fantastic.

It is a great discussion book for 4th to 6th graders. The author captures moments of sadness as well as humor. Alyssa's "out-there" personality makes you laugh. You will ask yourself, "Am I elastic?" With an unexpected event or two, Shreve does an excellent job of making the story come alive.
