5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Cartooning Book!, September 29, 2004
This review is from: Big Book of Cartooning (Paperback)
This book has everything, I mean everything about drawing cartoons. It covers drawing people, animals, cars, you name it, it's in this book. It also has a section on caricatures and comic strips. This book is huge and is a great bargain!
Much cheaper than taking a class on how to draw.
Best investment I've made for learning about cartoons.
I have two other how to cartoon books and this one is the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, April 26, 2007
This review is from: Big Book of Cartooning (Paperback)
A casual glance through this book originally made me think it looked too cutesy and not what I wanted. I'll still say that too many of his characters and examples are cutesy, and rather stilted. But there's a lot of excellent material here. I found several tips that I (so far) haven't seen in several other books. I've had several nagging questions: Exactly how do I get things done? How is a finished cartoon created? On what size and kind of paper, using what tools? Blitz walks you through all of that stuff. The section on drawing backgrounds and perspective was also really handy.

I'd say this is the single best book I've seen to get started on cartooning. Even if you want to draw some other, very different style (like, some kind of dark Batman comic or something), if you have little or no cartooning experience, this book will be helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, April 15, 2007
This review is from: Big Book of Cartooning (Paperback)
I don't consider my self to possess any artistic abilities when it comes to drawing. I wanted to enter a contest on YouTube where I had to draw pictures of things. I got this book. Followed the easy to use instructions, drew my pictures, entered the contest and won the $5,000 grand prize. I would definitely say I got my money's worth from this book and much much more. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looks fun!, December 26, 2006
This review is from: Big Book of Cartooning (Paperback)
Bought this for my daughter (9) because her art teacher only wants to teach them abstract art and not let them get into any kind of drawing or painting. Well bump her! I'll teach my daughter some fun stuff at home, and I will have fun doing it with her! It's got a lot of detail on how to make cartoons and the book is quite large. Gives a lot of instruction on how to prep for doing this kind of artwork. I think the book is challenging but not intimidating for kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be drawing better than you ever thought!, April 13, 2009
By
This review is from: Big Book of Cartooning (Paperback)
I've been trying to learn cartooning for several years. Now I won't claim to be a great cartoonist and never will be because I don't have that great natural talent.

But thanks to this book, I've drawn quite a bit and have gotten many compliments on my cartoons.

The best way to learn cartooning is to study examples, sometimes trace over the examples.

This book is *filled* with examples. Hundreds of pages, many per page.

It also covers many subjects. I love the faces section, especially how to convey different emotions, but my favorite is the objects section. Bruce Blitz shows you how to break down any object into a few basic shapes (cylinder, cone, etc.). Basically you need to do is practice drawing the shapes, but once you can draw them decently, you can draw basically any object. You don't need to learn how to draw objects individually. You just need to learn how to "see" objects as a combination of a few basic shapes.

A few tips:

*Blitz says, rightly, that you shouldn't go overboard with art supplies. All you need to start with is a pencil, some regular paper, and a nice eraser. Yet he describes many fancy art supplies, which may confuse some readers. I suggest starting with the following: Pencils of a few different hardnesses. A good eraser; Blitz recommends a kneaded eraser, but I think Staedtler(R) Mars(R) Plastic Erasers are better. A small lightbox proved a great investment. Don't bother with the fancy screens and colors that he discusses.

*If you don't have great natural talent, begin by tracing over his drawings. It helps a lot to first imitate.

*Prepare to spend time than you think. Great cartoonists can churn them out in a few minutes, but for us non-cartoonists, it takes tons of time. I was surprised how long it took for me to produce a great cartoon, but it's been worth it, as I've gotten many compliments on my cartoons.

I can't believe how much you get from this book for the price. It could cost three or even four times as much, and it would still be well worth it.

Happy cartooning!
