4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent WWII RTS game
I gave the game 4 stars as I originally purchased for online play with friends. Latency issues make the game unplayable (we havent had an opportunity to play lan yet).
However in single player mode, the game is very fun.
The graphics are vivid and remind me of Sacred. The controls are easy to learn, and most carry from one unit to the next.

I loved the concept of having a set amount of troops and equipment. Figured this game would be a great game to use real tactics and not the standard RTS bum rush technique.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent WWII RTS game, June 12, 2006

This review is from: Blitzkrieg Anthology (CD-ROM)
I gave the game 4 stars as I originally purchased for online play with friends. Latency issues make the game unplayable (we havent had an opportunity to play lan yet).
However in single player mode, the game is very fun.
The graphics are vivid and remind me of Sacred. The controls are easy to learn, and most carry from one unit to the next.
The game comes on 5 cd's. the first 2 are Blitkreig, the next 2 are expansion packs, and the last is a special expansion pack.
The missions are reletively short with a limited battle field.
Terrain comes into play quite well. For example I had a scout/sniper crawling through some brush and his view of the enemy would flicker as it would if he was in actual brush.
You do not get to purchase new units like in Command and Conquer series, so you have to make good with what you are given.
As far as I can tell all weapon types from WWII for each given faction are present in the game.
I do recommend this game if you like real time strategy. Its easy to learn and quite extensive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad for a S&T game., February 10, 2007
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blitzkrieg Anthology (CD-ROM)
I got in a bit of a mood after watching HBO's Band Of Brothers and wanted to blow up some bad guys so I picked up the original version of Blitzkrieg. After a few weeks and running out of missions I picked up this boxed Anthology...obviously there's some fun and addiction built into the premise and mechanics of the game. Having now played both BK and BK2, I prefer the over-all nature of this, the original. The controls and graphics are more natural and intuitive in this anthology. With Blitzkrieg 2, they've changed some of the controls around, causing a few curses for those familiar with the original, plus BK2's graphics suddenly seem less realistic and more pastel in colour...go figure.

I can only give this game 4 stars, however. After a while you notice repetition in layout and can guesstimate quite accurately the layout of enemy positions (you begin shelling the heck out of that cliff face just down the road from your camp at the beginning of every mission just because you know there's anti-tank guns on it). I suppose this would have happened in real life to some extent if you knew an opposing general's mannerisms, but probably not to the extent you get used to them in this game. The enemy attacks aren't well coordinated either. Bad guy tanks will attack more in single file, rather than abreast to concentrate more fire on your positions. Little things like this make the game less than 'realistic', but what it lacks in that department it makes up for in becoming more a relaxing beer and pretzels kind of fun, which I enjoy. I have fun using the 'c' button on infantry units (splitting them up from formation to individual movement) and moving them in to villages covering each-other and flushing out enemy positions which tanks and artillery can fire upon, I seem to recall this feature being dropped in BK2, which was annoying. Which brings me to one of the major negatives of the franchise...the add-on 'Mission Kursk' for the BK anthology.

Even with BK2 there was a general similarity with difficulty and capabilities of individual units. I expected Mission Kursk to give me the same playability as other BK missions. HA! They've changed the whole mechanics of the game and the 'fun' gamelike atmosphere is completely diminished. If you want the aggravation of being fired upon by artillery with no chance of returning fire, attacks by enemy aircraft with no chance to bring in your own air defense, weapon ranges doubled, character movement slowed down, snipers no longer being 'invisible'...all the headaches and hair-pulling of actual war, then Mission Kursk is your game. I bring this up because you will want more missions after playing this BK anthology, however Mission Kursk is frustration, not fun. Unfortunately, I have no info about Green Devils and Operation Barbarossa, but I'm hoping the game mechanics haven't been messed with in those missions as well because I really would like to play more, just based on the ORIGINAL mechanics. You shouldn't mess with a good thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Realistic WWII Realtime Game Ever Made, November 30, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blitzkrieg Anthology (CD-ROM)
This is by far the best WWII game ever made. It is even better then Blitzkrieg 2. The realism of the units is amazing and the articifical intelligence is pretty good. There are historical scenarios which can be very challenging and then computer generated ones which are easier, but lots of fun. Only one problem with this game is that it will not work on a laptop that uses power saving technology. Basically that's all modern laptops. The game detects the computer's speed incorrectly and as a result the game is not playable. Only buy this game if you play on using a desktop or have an older non-speed step technology laptop.

Blitzkrieg Anthology is very easy to install on your PC and once it is up & running there are so many missions to play it is great. The Grey Panzers is one of the best Mod's that have been created for this platform, excluding Kursk because I personally won't purchase a download and prefer actual software in case it has to be uninstalled.I do recommend this game to anyone who enjoys WWII real time stragedy games it will not disapoint and it is way better then the Close Combat series and this product gets a thumbs up fro me.

I like the 3D engine that generates the realistic background effects. I am still learning how to play, yet, have to say the game is good. I look forward to other CDV games like this one. Because of the high level graphics this game has, I bought a new computer to enjoy the Blitzkrieg experience.

This game is a very fun game but it is not a game for you if you don't like srategy games. The game invloves lots of strategy and can prove frustruating from time to time but overall the game is lots of fun to play.

The answer to all true wargamers dreams. All the action of an RTS with all the control of a turn-based game. The units are modeled beautifully and act realistically (after you learn to use them) ... Perfect!

The game actually stumbles when it comes to playing against the computer. You will end up having to reload previous saved games to make it through a mission because the computer is very good.

I found myself spending more time reloading saved games and saving every couple of minutes than playing the game as a true strategy game.

This game is awesome. Is a classic.
You have to think and set your strategy in order
to achieve victory.
If you like WW2 games, this should be part of your collection.

Also try to get:

Blitzkrieg-Green Devils
Stalingrad
Panzerkrieg Burning Horizon 2

and you're good to go!
