From the Manufacturer

Eisenhower, Rommel, Zhukov; Assume your rightful place among the great generals commanding the Allies, Germans or Soviets as they advance through the decisive battles of WWII. Blitzkrieg is the latest development in WWII real-time strategy gaming combining flexibility, historic accuracy and endless playability into one of the most challenging and enjoyable games yet!

Blitzkrieg's unique and completely flexible campaign structure puts you in control of deciding how your forces will fare in each of the major engagements that comprise three central Campaigns. Hardcore vets have the option of engaging the enemy immediately in a desperate struggle for battlefield dominance, or more cautious players can choose from pre-defined or unlimited randomly generated side missions as they gain experience, promotions and weapons upgrades as well as wear down the enemy before the central conflict.

Historical accuracy is pushed to the edge as each unit is endowed with the actual capabilities and characteristics that existed at the time. Details such as the thickness of a tank's armor down to the range of infantry rifles add a level of previously unprecedented realism. Each campaign has been meticulously researched to provide an accurate depiction of the battles that took place, while still maintaining the flexibility (and fun!) necessary to let you play the way you want.

Two robust editors are Blitzkrieg's keys to unlocking endless game play possibilities. The Mission Editor allows you to generate and add your own missions, chapters and campaigns according to the options you want most, from level of difficulty to type of action. The Resource Editor gives you total license to redesign the game, add or modify units, characteristics, colors, textures, sounds and more - unlimited freedom to play the game on your terms.

Key Features:

  • Flexible campaign structure that frees you from standard difficulty and level settings
  • Historically accurate campaigns where you lead the Allies, Germans or Soviets through actual WWII battles in real time
  • Mission and Resource editors let you create new campaigns, chapters and missions as well as completely modify the game environment and units
  • Realistically rendered 3D terrain including over 350 various buildings and objects
  • Command over 200 types of military vehicles and equipment and more than 40 different infantry units that interact naturally, based on their actual physical properties and characteristics.
  • Build bridges, dig trenches and pits, lay mines, resupply and repair units and call in air support when needed
  • Battles feature different seasons, climate zones, and weather conditions that affect game play
  • Multiplayer LAN and Internet support

I was really hesitant to buy this game because I already own Sudden Strike and SS Forever - naturally I thought that this title would simpy be a rehash of the same SS material (remember SS2?). But I was patient (and diligent in looking at the new daily online reviews fom different gamers). Every wargamer I spoke to or read basically said the same thing - that Blitzkrieg was really an amazing game and whatever SS lacked (we are talking about 2-3 year old tech), this particular title had.
So I went out and bought the game. Let me tell you something my fellow wargamers - this title is simply awesome. I was impressed on many fronts (no pun intended). And the game is what SS should always have been.
Graphics - Simply amazing. The way that the landscape/buildings looks and the way the units have been rendered is what I lke the most. I'm really glad you can see all the unit insignia's because in SS you can barely see the camoflage on the tanks. Now all those fine details are there.
Gameplay - I finally have the control I need on the units. This makes the breakdown of squads and platoons much easier than in the past - and this makes the gameplay all that much more enjoyable.
Historical value - Besides the fact the most of the missions conform to actual campaign missions from WW2, the game boasts a historical overview inc. maps before every mission. Nival also included a great deal of movie footage as well as a unit/vehicle database which I think is just amazing and adds much atmosphere to the game. BTW, I heard that the developers (who are Russian - Spasiba guys) spent a great deal of time in the Moscow miltary museums researching the specs on different weapons and armour. Their hard work and research really made a difference with this title.

Well i have to admit, when i played the demo of blitzkrieg i was already hooked.
I'm new to real time strategy games, i'm a turn baser of old!
For your info i'm running a P4 2.4 gig, 256 ram, with a 64 meg graphics card, and i had absolutley no trouble running this game, no hiccups.
Untill i played the demo i was hooked on panzer general 3d and scorched earth, those WERE my bread and butter games.
This game is great!
If i gave this game a 5 star rating then it would have to be perfect and its not.
But its damn near close.
As other reviewers mentioned, it gets kind of tedious when you have to supply your vehicles, and you are kind of vulnerable when you do this unless you have your area very well secured, i guess i had to get used to the idea of enemy units attacking me at a moments notice, DEFEND DEFEND DEFEND!
What i really like about this game is when you are deploying "artillery for example" and you actually see the guys picking and packing up the guns, seeing the arms on the guns swing open and deploy, never had anything like that in panzer general, that alone is really neat!
I'm a bit of a WWII amature armour history buff so i really get a great deal of joy to see that the damage is realistic, for example i have this other game a WWll tank simulator, and in that game, "if your playing as the germans" is very disheartening to have your panther or tiger1 shot to peices by a ordinary sherman tank at 2000 yards!
That just did'nt happen, so i'm happy that this game uses realistic damage in it.
I just wish i could figure out how to delete my old saved games, but other than that i would highly reccomend this game to anyone.
The learning curve is a little steep only because you need to learn what tanks and guns can do what and what they can't do, but there is a section where you can look at all the units in this game to help you with that.
I am very happy i bought this game!

I can only compare it to Red Alert, my previous favorite RTS game. Blitzkrieg is much more realistic and detail-oriented. There are 200 vehicle types available, and they seem to accurately reflect actual historical weapons. The terrain is interactive: houses and trees can be blown-up, bridges can be built, trenches dug, etc... You can call in air support in the form of one of the following options: observation plane, fighters, heavy bombers, ground attack planes or paratroop transport.
Playability is good, though some of the support units need to be micromanaged to be effective. Laying a minefield takes forever because engineers have to be directed to lay each mine. Also, repair and re-supplying vehicles have to be directed to specific vehicles. Ironically, the fighting units are more autonomous, you give them a fighting posture and they'll respond to the enemy accordingly (engage, ambush, ignore, etc...) Air units are more abstract. You pick one type of air support at a time and select a target. Bombers decimate ground units, but are quickly dispatched by fighters or heavy AAA.
While playing the third battle, I ended up in an artillery dual with the computer. It reminded me of recent battles fought in Gulf I & II. You engage the enemy, then clear the area before their artillary starts landing. With a scout and the Russian's heavy artillary, you can easily destroy everything on the map.

Just finished playing the demo, and was very pleasantly surprised. Was expecting another Sudden Strike, but this game is far superior. Finally they have got the armor values right. Riflemen and jeeps can no longer take out tanks. Even other tanks have to try for flank or rear shots if their main gun is too small. Gameplay is very easy, and graphics are outstanding. I think CDV has finally gotten their ducks in a row with this one. Anxiously waiting for my retail copy to arrive.. :-)
