I was impressed with H&R Block At Home Premium throughout the process of figuring my taxes. The import from the previous year's tax forms, generated by TurboTax 2011, went without a hitch, as far as I could tell.

The problems began when I started trying to file them.

I started calling H&R Block Support when I got to the e-filing screen: the panel called out my total tax bill and said withdrawal would be made from my bank account (as I'd specified). But it didn't specify that I'd chosen to pay only a portion of my bill at filing time. So I wanted some reassurance that indeed only the specified amount would be withdrawn.

That's when the problems started.

1. You can hang on wait for as along as 30 minutes before getting to an agent. H&R Block's phone system keeps playing elevator music, interspersed with reminders of how important your call is. No indication of how deep in the queue you are, or estimate of wait time, or suggestions about when they would be less busy.

2. The support staff are very pleasant and knowledgeable about the software, but could not verify that only a partial payment would be withdrawn. They suggested I just print my forms and mail them in with a check.

I tried that, but the first few forms came out of the printer labeled "Not For Filing"! So I called again.

3. This time the staffer walked me through several different avenues of printing my return, from doing the whole thing from the proper screen to printing form by form as selected from their "Used Forms" panel. In each case, the forms came up labeled "Not For Filing". The staffer tried to solve the problem by having me look at specific control buttons and pop-up menus on the various print screens.
