Product Description

Erin has never been secretive, but she's starting to wonder; is it still keeping a secret if you just don’t tell anybody? What if nobody asks?

Could what Margret and her friends (or henchmen) are doing be Erin's secret? Erin is being bullied at school. She hasn’t reported the abuse to anyone in charge, not her teachers, or her parents–she hasn’t even talked to her twin brother Tim about it. Erin believes her reasons for not discussing what’s going on are good. Or she did. She’s not so sure anymore.

The bullying has gone from insults to physical attacks that are getting dangerous. They’re bad enough that now Erin is scared to go to school. It’s stopped feeling like a safe place to be. Can what she’s learning in taekwondo help?

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Chapter in the King of the Marshmallows, June 4, 2011

This review is from: Block! (King of the Marshmallows) (Kindle Edition)
The second installment of the "King of the Marshmallows" story focuses on Erin and her brother Tim, who also has Asperger's like the main character Mark, introduced in "Ready! King of the Marshmallows". Things get more serious in this chapter with the introduction of a bully at school. I'm worried how it will all eventually end, but surely taekwondo will help these kids find some answers they need?

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching!, May 25, 2011
This review is from: Block! (King of the Marshmallows) (Kindle Edition)
I love the relationship between Erin and her brother Tim. The author shows very subtly how Erin stands up to a bully and becomes the victor. It's great how the author uses Taekwondo to unite these kids affected by Asperger's. Well done short story on an increasing, alarming trend in schools, bullying!

5.0 out of 5 stars BLOCK! These Kids Need It!, April 22, 2011
This review is from: Block! (King of the Marshmallows) (Kindle Edition)
BLOCK! is the second in the King of the Marshmallows series by Lydia Ondrusek. Unlike the first installment, READY! - which explores the frustration of Mark, a kid who finds some relief in Taekwondo - BLOCK! tells the tale of twins, Tim who has Asperger's and his sister Erin, who acts as his buffer. Unfortunately, Erin has problems of her own, in the form of a Mean Girl who makes snide comments that fly over Tim's head and who is also physically abusive to Erin. (This part I found disturbing.) Erin takes it (and takes it, and takes it) until she loses it, fighting back and ending up in in-school suspension. Poor Tim reacts but doesn't realize the consequences of his actions, and ends up next to her. (That part I found sweet.)

I'd recommend BLOCK! for any middle grade child, and definitely for the parents of kids this age. You don't want to helicopter, but it's good to know what modern kids are up against.
