What a great approach!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Block by Block: New Techniques for Machine Quilting and Assembly (Paperback)
This is a great way to get started learning to machine quilt. By working on one block at a time, instead of a whole quilt top, the quilting process becomes more manageable. Detailed instructions are given for 25 different blocks, 5 corner designs, and 3 types of sashings, that you can mix and match to make any size quilt you would like. Step-by-step and easy to follow cutting and piecing instructions are given, plus an 8-page gallery of quilts that are quite inspiring. But best of all are the excellent suggestions on how to quilt each block.

This book is GREAT! The instructions are very clear. I love the yardage chart, it takes out the guess work. These instructions on how to quilt block by block can be applied to any quilt pattern. This was the best purchase ever.

GREAT BOOK,

At the time I purchased Block by Block, I also purchased two other "quilt as you go" books. This is, by far, the ONLY book I would have needed!!!
You are able to quilt one block at a time...so I am able to really get into machine quilting. Then, there are instructions for connecting the blocks...to make any size quilt from a wall hanging to a king size!!! I am really impressed with the clear directions and the ease in machine quilting! I LOVE to hand quilt...but with this technique...I will be able to make some faster quilts from time to time...and we all need a "fast quilt" now and then!

Great on assembly, but less than three pages on Machine Quilting!,

I would like to give this book two separate ratings. As a basic how-to-make-quilts book, it deserves perhaps four stars. It's got nice, clear instructions on the basics of how to assemble a variety of simple quilt blocks.
However. As a book on "New Techniques for Machine Quilting," as the subtitle says, it barely deserves one star. There are precisely 2.75 pages devoted to how to quit your quilt, and most of that is devoted to stiching in the ditch. That's it! There's talk about how this book will help you quilt sections of the quilt before it's assembled, but the info on that part is sketchy, wordy, confusing, and short (3.25 pages) - I really need some pictures or summaries to make sense of it better. I bought this book for help on the quilting, not the patchwork, so I'm a bit disappointed.

Block by Block,
This review is from: Block by Block: New Techniques for Machine Quilting and Assembly (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for those who want to quilt but don't have a long arm quilting machine. As you make each square in a quilt, you quilt it, while it is still small. All squares in the book meaxure 12 x 12 when finished. It's a very easy size to handle on any regular sewing machine. Once you finish the squares you sew then into strips and then sew the strips together resulting in a full sized quilt ready for adding binding around the edges. The book includes a bunch of different squares with step by step instructions on how to commplete them. This section takes up most of the book. The book also offers a handy chart do determine how much fabric and how many squares you will need for quilts from lap size to king size. It also offers many helpful tips to make quilting easier and a list of supplies and tools. Some are necessary and some are just handy to have. The book tells which are neccessary. The drawings and written instructions are very detailed and easy to understand...even for this beginning quilter. It also has several pages of pictures of finished quilts using the squares in the book. Most of the pictures include several different types of squares in each quilt so it provides you with a picture of each square described in the book. An excellent book that I would highly recommend for beginners as well as advance traditional quilters. Very well written, easy to understand, step by step with drawings included for each step.

I have had this book for several years, and made several quilts using the techniques from this book. The step-by-step instructions are easy to follow, and I have been able to adapt the technique to other quilts as well, especially for the assembly. In creating my own quilting designs, I keep her concepts in mind, minimizing starts and stops, and starting from the center of the block and working outward. I truly enjoy being able to complete the quilt myself, on my home sewing machine.

I used this book to make my 1st quilt. I used blocks that I had already made and used the method in this book to finish the quilt. It was easy, of course I made mistakes, but it was the normal I am learning something new mistakes. I am very excited to try another quilt in this method. This time I will use on of the blocks in the book.
