4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful set, but I wish it was Lego., October 23, 2009

I normally avoid Mega Bloks because they have a tendency to be inferior in quality to Lego. This was the case here as well, with bricks that don't fit snugly and others that are warped. In the end there were certain parts that would not even stay on. The two chin-guns and the laser cannons would not stay on at all. In the end I had to bust out the super glue and glued everything that kept falling off. Now it makes a great display piece, but I can never take it apart, but I don't think I ever would have anyway.

Once together the Hawk looks absolutely awesome. Mega Bloks did an excellent job on the shape and appearance and the stickers and camo-colored blocks only add to the look.

While the Hawk is the focal point of the set the Banshee is every bit as good and looks as close to the video game as you could get. The figures are also very good, and much more articulated and realistic than the Lego offerings. Children may find them harder to pose because of this, but I didn't buy this for the kids, I bought it for me. ;)

If the set had been offered in Lego I would give it 5 stars but because of the quality issues with Mega Bloks I deducted 1 star. Be warned, if your child wants to be able to build and re-build the model it may be difficult because without super glue the Hawk had parts that would not stay together. The Banshee and gun turret, as well as the figures, were fine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice designs plagued by quality issues, November 13, 2009
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars

I purchased this set for my son for his 8th birthday. He loves all things Halo and was very excited to get a set featuring two of the flying vehicles featured in the series. Sadly, the shoddy manufacturing quality of this kit has meant more frustruation than fun for him.

I selected this set because it appeared to be a decent value. It contains a UNSC (human) Sparrowhawk as well as a Covenant (alien) Banshee, thus allowing for some good play scenarios without the need to buy more sets. The articulated and detailed figurines are also far more realistic than Lego's iconic blocky figurines.

The instructions are decent, though they vary enough from Lego logic to cause a few moments of head-scratching as you puzzle out what they mean. But there's nothing that can't be figured out with a minute or two of effort.

The real problems surfaced in handling the actual pieces. The appearance and color are not uniform, with many pieces having swirly patterns that appear to be anomolies from the plastic molding process. More seriously, the pieces generally do not fit into place tightly, meaning they can be knocked loose at the slightest touch. A few pieces were warped enough that they simply did not fit at all.

If you are more of a collector and plan to build these for display purposes only, then you're probably fine. But if you actually want to play with your creations, be prepared for pieces falling off at every movement and touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this set!, October 14, 2009

This was my first set in Mega Brands' Halo Wars line, and I was very eager to get my hands on it. The set is composed mostly of basic bricks, rather than over-specialized elements of limited versatility. The few pieces that are specialized, such as the two canopies, are still sufficiently useful to be easily incorporated into a range of custom creations.

The Hawk is IMO the best-designed aircraft I've seen from any brick-based construction toy in recent years, including LEGO. It has great lines and an unconventional attachment structure for the tail, and the end result is a scrappy little fighter that really looks like it can dish it out as well as take it. The cockpit holds one Spartan figure. It's armed with missiles, laser cannons beneath the wings, and a pair of chin-mounted machine guns. An excellent design overall.

The Banshee is also very good, with unusual angles and a truly sinister canopy. Even when it's just setting on my desk it appears to be in flight, and the forward mounted cannons appear to pack quite a punch! The down-swept wings give it the appearance of a predator.

In addition to the two craft, the set also includes a Covenant gun turret to give the Hawk a little something extra to worry about.

The set includes two Covenant forces and two Spartans, and the figures are really amazing--highly detailed sculpts with great articulation. One of the two Spartan figures carries a flame-thrower built from four separate elements yet quite sturdy when built.

This is easily one of my favorite brick constructions sets in quite a few years.
