Great item for engraving, which is what I used it for. Don't like the button though. Makes it a bit difficult to extend, but the clicks remind you to push it quickly.

A beautifully crafted product that gives either inch or metric dimensions.

Unfortunate,

I purchased this product under the impression that it was the original German. What arrived instead is a substandard, poorly finished, manufactured in China product. The outside steel casing was of decent quality steel. Here are the specific points which makes this product(that was shipped to me) a item not worth buying:
1. The stop switch is fitted in a poorly fitted plastic guard. Improperly spaced guard and its not finished well. Definitely not even close to german machining quality and materials. 2. The Clamp fixed at the end of the tape is loose! can you believe it? That makes it look like a $2.99 tool! 3. The tape is thin, and the edges are not perfectly polished. Under all probablity the edges will rust within a month of regular use. The markings on the take is just regular painted marks. That's probably still OK, but the quality of the paint seems poor and does not look like it will hold the test of time. Conclusion: The original german is a world famous product and is a marvel and a pride to own which will be a faithful companion for easily a decade. But what was shipped to me was a utter shame - a cheap $5 replica of the original - the atual item that was shipped to me also does not look like the product advertised on amazon. Once you order it and see it for yourself(especially if you know first hand what German machinery and quality is) you would be able to conclude for yourself that this product should be removed from Amazon and the seller should be suitably advised.

Construction doesn't live up to design,

I basically agree with the other reviewers saying that the build quality is substandard. The construction details are definitely not as good as you would expect from such a beautifully designed product. At first glance, the steel casing looks great and feels solid in your hand. It is very heavy considering the size, but I count that as a plus. (Just don't plan on carrying it around in your purse.) Then, when you pull the tape out, it will not take close inspection to see that they really didn't care about the guts of this product. I was surprised to see some rust/grime on the metal tab, and also some smudges on the back of the tape. Besides being rather offensively dirty, this metal tab is clumsily attached and wobbles around in all directions. I understand that it is supposed to protrude/retract to take inside and outside measurements, but I also understand how some people might mistakenly see this as a defect -- the poor quality of the attachment actually makes the protrude/retract movement *feel* like a manufacturing defect, not an intentional mechanism! The holes in the tab just do not fit the pegs correctly. In addition to that, the printed markings on the tape is a combination of seriously uneven ink, wobbly lines, and small smears/blotches. Honestly, I would rather have them price this at $50 or $100 or however much money it would take them to manufacture this with the care it deserves. It is a great design ruined by too much corner-cutting in the factory. Unfortunately, there are not many options on the market for sleek measuring tapes, so as sad as it is, I think I will have to settle with this one.

Ultimately disappointed,

At first glance, it appeared this measuring tape might be a triumph of design; a masterpiece of function. But substandard construction quality has left me unsatisfied. The bolt holding the two halves together was very loose, almost allowing the device to fall in two (which could have been very inconvenient, considering there's a spring under tension inside). Tightening the bolt was tricky, as it requires a hex wrench, not a screwdriver. In addition, the tab at the end of the tape is very loose, which could affect measurements by and eighth or a sixteenth of an inch. A measuring tape that's not completely accurate? How about applying some "function over form" here?
