Editorial Reviews

The City That Never Sleeps is about to meet the girl that doesn't quit. Jessica Simpson stars as Katie Gregerstitch, a small-town Oklahoma beauty who's come to New York to visit her long-time boyfriend. But after finding him in the arms of another woman, Katie decides to lose her cheating man and to find herself. With the help of two scheming co-workers (Andy Dick and Penelope Ann Miller), she lands a job at a top construction firm where she meets and falls for a great guy (Luke Wilson) with an even greater secret. Now, nothing is going to stop this go-getter from getting exactly what her heart desires in the romantic comedy that proves you can't keep a bright, beautiful down-home girl down. Also starring Willie Nelson.

As a fan of Jessica Simpson since her 1st single, I have to say that I am completely disappointed w/ this one & I'm surprised I stomached the entire film! Sure, she didn't do too bad in Dukes or Employee of the Month. But having a lead role isn't something she should have tried to accomplish. The plot is a good concept, but poorly written & doesn't seem to play out right. No one in this movie has any on screen chemistry what so ever. The lines are awful & have hardly an ounce of true emotion. It is just dead. The movie has no light. Jessica mainly makes strange noises & whines the entire movie, which gets annoying quite fast. Thank goodness I didn't buy this title & watched in online first! Phew. Save yourself a couple of bucks. If you want to see it because your curious, find the leaked version online or rent it for much less money. Jessica, stick to singing. You're much more accepted in that line of work. It takes a lot to disappoint a hardcore fan but... wow.

The trailer tricked me into watching this. For the first half hour it was pretty cool, like how she falls into the hole with the bike and then just lies there having a conversation with the dude, but after that all personality, flavor, and attention to detail disappears leaving all characters and situations one-dimensional. Most scenes in the romantic plotline lack context and feel like re-enecatments from other movies. They actually use the "romantic lead 1 sees romantic lead 2 hugging someone out of context and jumps to the wrong conclusion" thing. The rest is like an episode of Ugly Betty with all the office scheming drama. A made-for-tv calibre product, or maybe it should more accurately just be considered a kids movie.

I have a habit of watching late night movies and I get these movies off of DVD bargain racks, mostly at Ross Stores. It's an interesting thing to do and I've seen some really fine movies, such as "The Shawshank Redemption" a couple nights ago. Last night's movie was "Blond Ambition." Well, it was at the other end of the spectrum: an almost complete waste of time.

"Blond Ambition" was one of the worst movies I can remember seeing in a long time. Calling it a B movie would be overrating it. I'm trying to think of something good and Jessica Simpson comes to mind. She's a pleasant and fine-looking woman and I enjoy watching her, much as I used to enjoy watching Marilyn Monroe. Acting? Not really. She's just walking around being herself, and that's nice. I was somehow hoping the movie was a fun-filled comedy, but I guess that was asking too much. The rest of the cast is just embarrassing, but it fits. The story (small town girl makes it big in NYC) is moronic so why shouldn't it have bad acting? If it were only funny. But it isn't funny, it's pathetic. Maybe this movie needs to be seen in a crowded theater, or maybe it needs a laugh track I'm trying to picture this movie as being so bad that it's good. Nope, it just doesn't work. I guess it's just a badly constructed comedy that completely fails to go over, except that I enjoyed watching Ms Simpson.

Well, what can I say? I notice that it received a number of five-star reviews. Five stars? You've gotta be kidding! The reviewers' taste must be all in their mouths! Well, to each his/her own. And in defense of those misguided people, I must admit that I have enjoyed a few badly-acted B movies with extremely poor story lines and thoroughly enjoyed them. "Rock 'n' Roll High School" comes to mind.

I was interested in watching this one having seen so many negative reviews prior to release. I was expecting to see such god awful acting. That I did not see.

To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised watching this film. Maybe because my expectations were so low. However, Jessica actually impressed me with her acting and having seen only one of her other films (Employee of the Month), I think she is growing as an actress and has potential. It seemed obvious to me that she put more effort into acting better (not appearing so wooden) but instead relaxing into the role or maybe it is just that she had more to work with given that this is her first lead role.

Okay so the actual storyline now. Well since there are other reviews referring to this, I wont bother going over it in depth except to say that Jessica's character is a naive country girl who ends up in New York, is dumped by her boyfriend, happens to get a job in a big firm, finds out she was manipulated by one of the partners and her side kick (Penelope Ann Miller and Andy Dick) to shaft the head boss on a major deal and then tries to repair the damage. Of course all the while she falls for Love interest (Luke Wilson). Very basic and unspectacular storyline but let's face it, I don't think this was meant to be a complex love story.

The film is a feel good chick flick and being so does what it says on the tin. The cast are good and work well together especially Jessica and Willie Nelson as her grandad and Rachel Leigh Cook as her cousin.

So if you looking for light entertainment, this film with give you that. My only complaint really is that in some parts the script was too superficial and they could have tried to make it funnier. You won't burst out laughing throughout the film but it is humorous in general.
