Blondie!,
This review is from: Blondie (Audio CD)
There are plenty of cut-rate "Best of" albums for Blondie, but this one is one of the few that cuts the mustard. The two-disc set actually contains most of Blondie's best songs, without really skimping on any early album just because it was not their best.
It contains all of Blondie's major hits, which easily come to mind when you think of Blondie, like the catchy rocker "One Way or Another," breakup anthem "Heart of Glass," and the smoothly flowing "Tide is High." These tend to be pretty catchy and a bit on the poppy side, but a few don't fit into that mold such as "Call Me." There are also quite a few hits that are not quite as high profile as their biggest hit songs. But these lesser hits are excellent in terms of musicianship and lyrics -- and yes, they are sometimes just as catchy. For example, the edgy "X Offender," "Hardest Part," and the rather perky-sounding "I'm on E." As well as being a good "Best of" collection, this is also a good sampler of Blondie's classic albums -- with the exception of the rather lackluster "Hunter," there are at least three songs from each record they made. The only downside is that the songs are just cobbled together in whatever order. Chronological order would have been nice. But it's a fun way to pass the time. Deborah Harry's robust voice is fun, flexible and able to do just about song that Blondie put out. Except raps, that is. And the band backing her excelled at a mixture of punk, rock and pop, and this collection showcases each kind. Those guys were good at keeping their songs moving. This collection of Blondie's greatest and just-below-greatest hits is a solid collection, and a fairly good look at their classic songs. At the very least, it's a fun listen.
