Book Description

January 1, 2000
Nathan Stein--once an attractive, cultured lawyer--has slipped into the dark world of his powerful father's corrupt practice. After one too many shady deals, he finds himself alone, sick in body and spirit. His career and life are careening out of control, and he's about to become the prime suspect in the murder of a young woman. As we follow him over a long day and night, Nathan encounters the friends, lovers, and family members he has betrayed. Lurching toward redemption, he must answer for his actions. Is he a murderer or the victim of an elaborate frame-up? Or do his sins go even deeper? A tale of chilling suspense that belies the elegance of its prose, Blood Acre is a compelling story of one man's harrowing search through the dark streets of the soul.

"[A] brooding, beautifully written thriller" from the award-winning author of The Raven (Entertainment Weekly)

"A genuine tour de force, an apocalyptic murder mystery . . . that demands to be read in a single setting."-- Times Literary Supplement

"Exquisitely written."-- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Landesman's second novel (after The Raven), about 48 hours in the life of a dissolute New York attorney, offers a literate and menacing new perspective on the noirish territory already staked out by such writers as George V. Higgins. Nathan Stein, the son and partner of a powerful, corrupt defense lawyer, staggers through a singularly bad day, cutting his losses when "there is nothing left to cut." Not only is he physically and spiritually ill, but one of his many mistresses is dying, he is the prime suspect in his secretary's murder and a few of his shady deals and broken promises are coming back to haunt him. As his world implodes, Nathan's overactive beeper becomes a nagging, prosthetic conscience, scraping at the narrow vein of guilt that still remains in his soul. When he was a young man, Nathan flirted with culture and music and even love, but eventually, inevitably, he followed in the soiled footsteps of his father, Milton ("Stein and Stein's best and most successful defense: the irrelevance of guilt in a court of law"). While Landesman minutely examines Nathan's self-created problems, the ambitious plot sometimes creaks (for example, the homicide investigator and the murder victim may be Nathan's illegitimate siblings). Landesman's strength, however, lies in his ability to bring characters and scenes to life with economical but arresting detail. Ultimately, the novel becomes a fevered depiction of a neon-lit dystopia where the inhabitants are paralyzed by their own toxic relationships. (Jan.) FYI: Landesman's first novel, The Raven, won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

From Library Journal

Following in the footsteps of his corrupt father, lawyer Nathan Stein sleepwalks through deal after deal, unable to resist the next payoff. Nathan's despair is by his own devices; he doesn't so much regret his immoral actions as appear puzzled by the results. The formerly golden law student has finally lost it all?wife, best friend, mistresses, and the baby son he never even saw. Now it appears he has murdered his secretary as well. The pacing of this tale is excellent, and a mystery with more depth of characters and a plot more labyrinthine would be hard to scare up. New York City is at its most gothically creepy as the backdrop of this classic noir. In his second novel (following The Raven, Baskerville, 1995), Landesman elegantly renders the dark deeds in Nathan's world. This should be in all mystery collections.?Margaret A. Smith, Grace A. 1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of time, February 14, 2000
This review is from: Blood Acre (Paperback)
I couldn't agree more with the NY reader. The author's prose is incredibly pretentious, mendacious, self-absorbed and devoid of meaning. This is "it was a dark and stormy night" writing at its best. All form, no substance. Can't understand the good reviews on the back cover.

3.0 out of 5 stars Drop your guards, August 30, 2001
By
This review is from: Blood Acre (Paperback)
Before reading this book, it is necessary to drop all your guards and preconceived notions on what is and is not good prose. Yes, this novel starts out pretentiously. However, as the pages quickly turn...and they will, it become apparent that this is not pompous writing; it is writing by a skilled and talented author. Only a man with greatness in his fingertips can type out the consistently colorful and vivid phrases which he does. This novel is a murder mystery that I read cover to back in two sittings. I almost felt guilty reading the rich prose and hanging on to the dark and sexy storyline. I would recommend this only to true lovers of fiction. I read this after finishing Hemingway's "True at First Light" and it was an tasty turnabout from H's more terse (yet amazing) declarative sentences. Like eating fresh french baguette and then switching over to a gateau chocolat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great prose not much plot., April 7, 2000

This review is from: Blood Acre (Paperback)
While it is true that the prose and descriptions in this novel are compelling, the plot lacks a driving force. This book takes you inside a series of events, describes them beautifully, but does not take you on the a journey which reaches a true end or conclusion. I waited for everything to come together, but the novel simply concluded without resolution.
