5.0 out of 5 stars A Tale of Betrayal and Loss, February 4, 2010
This review is from: Blood Alone, Vol. 2 (Paperback)
I'm always mildly irritated at reviewers who give a low marks because of shipping problems rather than the book itself. Surprised that this volume had such a terrible rating, I investigated and decided to apply a brief corrective.

Even during a time awash in vampire novels, the Blood Alone series distinguishes itself. With clean, deceptively simple art, complex characters and a mysterious plot, Blood draws the reader into a world of quiet menace tinged with loss and longing. The story is about a somewhat naïve vampire girl, Misaki, and Kuroe, a young man who lost his sister to vampires. Misaki is sweet and exasperating in turn, and strikes a protective, brotherly chord in the novelist and part time investigator Kuroe. There are scenes of action and violence, but the focus of the series is on the lasting hurt and psychological damage of vampirism.

The second book covers 8 chapters, or episodes, and reveals more of the plot and background of the main characters. The book moves almost leisurely at first, exploring the strange world of vampire society, but suddenly accelerates to an emotionally shattering climax. Infinity Studios is to be commended for high production values, including a colored sleeve and crisp printing on quality paper. Blood Alone is a series for readers interested more in emotional resonance than bloody action. Volume 2 earns my highest rating for a tale of melancholy sadness that lingers long after reading.
