The Sons of Navarus series continues...

I am everything forbidden. I am vampire.

Haunted by betrayal, Saint hides in the human world, giving his heart to no one and finding the only solace from his past in the arms of human women. Now as the Archons begin their takeover of the vampire world, this Son of Navarus has been marked for death.

Summoned to defeat the Archons by the world that shunned him, Saint must face his past and Solenne, the woman he loved and lost a century ago, for only in accepting her will his body and soul finally find salvation.

The Sons of Navarus is a dark urban fantasy series in which each book builds on previous books, so none are stand alone. While some couples do have happy endings in their books, not all will by the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Read! May 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As I sit here trying to write this review I find myself tongue tied. This book evoked such a powerful response in me that I have no idea how to convey it. Not to mention trying to do that without any spoilers LOL!

Blood Betrayed is the second book in Gabrielle Bisset's Sons of Navarus series and is Saint's story. Saint, otherwise known as Declan Collins, is the brother of Teagan who was Vasilije's vampire that got staked at the beginning Blood Avenged.

Blood Betrayed starts off right where Blood Avenged ends. It also starts off with a flashback - there are a lot of them in the book as the author uses them to enhance the story -where we learn that our hero is a criminal in his world. He was shunned for 10 years for his crime - dishonoring the sire bond. You see, in Gabrielle Bisset's vampire world the most important laws revolve around the bond between a vampire and his sire. The sire sorta "owns" the vampires that he/she makes and only when the sire is ready can the vampire make certain decisions of his/her own. The thing was, because Saint had an extremely negligent and absent sire his views on the sire bond were very liberal and along with some betrayal got him in trouble. Not to mention caused him to become a terrible sire himself.

Saint and his brother Teagan were both turned on the same night though Teagan was turned by Vasilije. I must say, despite all his faults, Vasilije can be a great sire to his favorites. He was like this with Teagan and Saint grew to dislike him for it. Not only had he taken Teagan from Saint but he also caused him to change into someone that Saint no longer wanted to be around.

OK, so you're probably wondering why I'm babbling about the bond between vampires and sires so much. There is a couple of reasons why. First and foremost is because the whole story revolves around it. When Saint became a Son he needed the strength that only vampire blood could provide so he could fight the Archons. Because he would only drink from his own - he got the name Saint because he only slept with human women and drank vampire blood when only absolutely necessary and even then he would only drink from his on vamps - it became a problem when none of his vampire responded to his calls. They did this because he was a rotten sire. Another reason that I put so much significance on the relationship between vampires and their sires is because though Vasilije is the leader of the Son's, Saint can't stand him because of the way he used his sire bond to control Teagan. Since Vasilije was in this book a lot, we got to see Saint's less than pleasant reaction a lot LOL! The third reason why I spoke so much about sire bonds is because that's what brought our Heroine Solenne into the war between the Sons and the Archons- the power hungry judges of the vampire world. Solenne is on of Teagan's vampires and she wanted to get back at the Archons for their part in killing Teagan. When she learned that Saint was to be the next Son to have an assassin sent after him she took him in to protect him.

So now that I've given you some of the background info let me tell you me opinion on the book. I LOVED IT!

One thing that I really loved about this book was that there were two things that happened that took me totally by surprise. The first one the death of a once beloved character. The second was the appearance of someone that I never thought I'd meet. Let me tell you, it was a true OMG moment I even had to email Gabrielle about these things to say "What the hell?". That's the best thing about indie authors, they tend to cultivate closer relationships with their fans.

Another cool thing about this book was the awesome attention to character development. Gabrielle's excellent usage of flashbacks gave the reader such a wonderful picture of who Saint really was. It was so easy to feel his loneliness. The continuation of Vasilije's presence in the series shows us just how different he his from Saint. It also shows us just how much of an obnoxious jerkwad he can be. While we saw him as a hero and a lover in Blood Avenged we now get a different look at him. The mystery character that I mentioned? Yeah, he's an a$$h*le. He was only in the story for a short time but my disgust of him was real. Gabrielle made it easy to hate him. It was also easy to hate the primary villain, the Archon Marc Verrater. Because of the way he was written I can easily picture him and his evilness.

I guess the thing that I loved the most about this was that the author kept me guessing. There was no "premature explanation". I kept on trying to figure out who exactly betrayed Saint and what he had actually done to require such a severe punishment for his supposed crime. It took me a while to figure out why Saint hated - or appeared to hate - Solenne as much as he did. It was like everywhere you turned there was another surprise.

As far as the romance in this book goes it was pretty neat. Within Saint lies a poet's heart. Listen to this "I spent a century alone, an outcast from the world, but what was worse was not having you." This was another good one "Solenne, they've called me Saint for nearly a century because I refused to sleep with any female vampire - not just mine but any female of our kind. Did you doubt that I love you? That I ever stopped loving you?" I mean, the guy had only slept with one female vampire and because he loved her some much he wasn't going to do it with another. *sigh*

I just can't say enough good things about this book. Gabrielle Bisset has another hit on her hands!

On a side note...

The Archon's assistant Rochelle's continuous babbling about subjects that nobody cared about reminded me of my man. He's constantly droning on about something or other LOL

I suggest reading this series in order. You might also want to read Gabrielle's novella Vampire Dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Second Installment! May 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just finished the second book of The Sons Of Navarus and I have to say it was wonderful! I recommend reading the first one as they really introduce you to the characters and involved story lines. This book weaves both past and presant nicely and moves at a good pace. I love that the sex scenes were very hot and intense and with that being said they are part of a great story and well developed characters so it really brought it all together nicely. Cant wait for the third story to come out-this is a great book and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

4.0 out of 5 stars Saint is Fabulous! August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
My Dearest Vasilije,

Sweetheart, you stole my heart right from the start. Dare I say, you had me at "hello" Your bravery, strength, and power initially attracted me...but it was your heart and your passion that won me over. You are so wise and intelligent, I can't really say there is anything about you that I don't adore. Dark, mysterious...Romanian. You have been the vampire of my dreams. And for our time together... my darling, I can do nothing but thank you.

But my love, Vasilije, I have found another. Yes, yes its true. His name is Declan. Yes, that Declan. I know you are more accustomed to calling him Saint, and trust me, I do it myself from time to time. But darling Vasilije, I've fallen in love with Declan and I fear that I can not love another...not while I love Declan, anyhow.

I understand you'd rather I call him Saint, I know it hurts you to know I have so quickly grown so familiar with him. Saint it shall be. Saint is strong and honorable. I know you don't want to hear the reasons I love him so, but I must tell you - I don't want you to think our emotions together were in vain. Saint, he sets my heart aflame. Did you know that it has been a hundred years since he's known the love of another vampire? Yes, I know it was out of respect for the one he loved. But that only makes me love him more! To show such will power, such love, such... stamina of character; he is truly a man, nay! A vampire to love. And then when the Archons targeted him he did not shrink away, but rose to the occasion! *sigh* He excites me with his stubborn streak, his hidden side. I have no choice but to run to his side as fast as I possibly can! And while it is impossible to know who to trust in this day and age, when everyone seems to have cause to be against you - Saint, my Declan, he can count on me to be true. Yes, I know he has secrets - but don't we all? Well, just in this volume of the Sons of Navarus series alone we learn volumes about several people! I know that things aren't always as they seem, and my Saint knows this too...now. Everything that happened was just as much a shock to me as it was to you, darling Vasilije. But Saint is strong, he can overcome anything. That is what I admire about him so much, the self punishment he put himself through just shows how big his heart really is.

Vasilije, I hope that you can forgive me for my fickle heart. There will always be a place for you within its chambers.

Truly, Madly,
Fictional Candy

Ok, now for the "proper" review. I just thought I'd have a little fun up there!

Blood Betrayed is the second book in the Sons of Navarus series. Just as I hope with any series, there was no steam lost. Gabrielle really did a wonderful job with Saint and Solenne.

Saint is a one hundred year old vampire, and the brother of Teagan who was murdered in Blood Avenged. His actual name is Declan, but he's sort of earned the nickname of Saint because after a hearing before a previous Archon and his subsequent shunning, he kept to himself for the next hundred years. That means no sex with a vampire female, only humans. Truly an interesting twist! And then when the secrets start coming out about why he made those decisions, they were a bit heart melting!

This book is full of secrets. It seems that everyone has got them! Solenne, who has promised to help protect Saint while he is in "hiding" from the Archon's assassins has kind of gone undercover to try to get information on who the Archon is sending in to kill Saint. This is so dangerous!! I just wanted to shake her and ask her "What the heck are you doing?!?" But Solenne is not some fledgling little vampire. The woman is strong and very capable of taking care of herself. I truly enjoyed getting to know her as a character.

We got to meet a few more vampires in this series, like Dante and Terek. And we got to see a bit of Vasilije, which is always nice. I know I'm practically throwing Vasilije away for Saint... but if I could have my way, I'd keep them both locked up in my dungeon! Those two guys are so very different in every way. It really made learning about Saint and his story a lot of fun.

There are some really shocking things to happen in this story! I was really on the edge of my seat when some of the big secrets came out! Things happened in this book that I never expected. I think that is truly wonderful that Gabrielle Bisset can write a story so perfectly that she can throw a curve ball at you, make it completely real and believable and surprise the heck out of you at the same time!

I don't want to give up too much of this story. Suffice it to say that Saint is hot. He is a man who is deeper than the ocean, and his level of self-sacrifice is just so commendable. When a woman falls in love, its this undying devotion that Saint has that we all hope for. So what are you waiting for? Start reading!!

More About the Author

Thanks for visiting my author page. I'm a UF/PNR author and my newest releases are Blood Spirit, the third book in my new series Sons of Navarus, and the Sons short stories Longing and The Deepest Cut.

For me, a book does more than just tell a story. It transports readers away from their daily lives to another place where they can be a part of something different than the common and everyday. I'm always so touched when readers tell me they felt like they were a part of the story when they read my books.

When I'm not writing, I can be found reading romance novels but often mysteries, cookbooks, and anything dealing with ancient and medieval history and European history, in general. I also love the outdoors, so I enjoy the wonderful weather Pennsylvania has to offer. I live there with my son and a herd of pets.

Some of my favorite authors are Charlotte Featherstone, Robin Schone, Marie Treanor, and Gena Showalter.
