Editorial Reviews

The Blood Brothers' studio recordings are fairly raucous, but still somewhat controlled, while this live recording is more chaotic. An 11-song performance marking the tenth anniversary of the Old Fire House club in Seattle, WA, on September 27, 2002, the show finds the quintet on a tiny stage before a packed audience, using the claustrophobic conditions to their benefit. Co-lead singers Johnny Whitney and Jordan Blilie screech over the punk arrangements played by guitarist Cody Votolato, bassist Morgan Henderson, and drummer Mark Gajadhar. A primary influence would seem to be Gang of Four, in the angularity of the playing and the chanted nature of the singing, but the Blood Brothers are fiercer and more energetic. Whitney in particular attracts attention, often crowd-surfing and finding himself thrown back on-stage. The songs are nearly incoherent, of course, but the band's power is undeniable. The DVD also contains audio-only performances of "Ambulance Vs. Ambulance," "USA Nails," and "Mutiny on the Ark of the Blood Brothers," as well as a discography and a photo gallery. Jungle Rules Live gives a good sense of the band's music and its performing style, both of which can be described as extreme. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for a true BB fan!, June 25, 2008

Even if you are only a moderate Blood Brothers fan, there is really no reason not to buy this because it's so not expensive. But anyways, let's face it, the Blood Brothers are no longer together so you should try to get as much of their content as you can. I eat up all I can find. I'll admit, the video quality of this DVD is not that great but I actually liked the underground feel. The audio isn't that bad. It is a recording of their 5th anniversary concert on 9/27/2002 at the Old Firehouse. The concert is about 40 minutes of intense thrashing and Johnny Whitney shaking his head like he has in every performance I've ever seen. Oh and for the ladies, and even some men, Jordan takes his shirt off and gets all sweaty. Johnny gets all sweaty too but just ends up soaking his shirt. The set list consists of some awesome jams including: Kiss of the Octopus, Jennifer, Siamese Gun, Doctor! Doctor!, and Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon plus more. Come on people, for like $2.00 you can relive the good ol' days when the Blood Brothers were not broken up, it's totally worth it. Well, I'm gonna go watch my copy again!

3.0 out of 5 stars Live baby live!, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Jungle Rules Live (DVD)
This is a necessary item to have for anyone who's a fan of the blood brothers because they were simply one of the best live acts PERIOD.

If it's only a question of having something live from them then i suggest buying their burn piano island burn cd enchanced album that includes 2 live songs. it's not a dvd but it's still a live thing.

everyone who's into hardcore should experience the blood brothers live at least once and the only way to do so now is through this release.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Blood Brothers... On DVD!?, March 24, 2003
This review is from: Jungle Rules Live (DVD)
I knew that the Blood Brothers had joined a major label, which seemed like a ludicrous idea to me; nevertheless, I am anxiously anticipating the new album. For those unititiated in The Blood Brothers universe, they are a bizarre and spastic blend of hardcore, prog rock, and about a dozen other genres. The key here is spastic though. They also have two vocalists, not so much to cover two different vocal ranges, but more out of necessity at live shows. Because they spew forth their verse at such rapid speed and with such erratic dynamics, they need both to cover the whole spectrum of a song. I feel this DVD adequately captures the frenzy of their live show, although some of the more melodic sensibilities are lost in the raw live setting. Also, some of my favorite songs by them are missing (Piano Song!). Of course, that's just personal preference. If you are a Blood Brothers fan, you probably already have this, and if you aren't, go ahead and pick it up. It's cheap and if you don't like it, there will always be someone who will.
