Editorial Reviews

"Philip Roy's young adult novel, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg, is a swiftly told, exciting, informative read that will also appeal to older readers....Roy writes economically but with sensitivity and a strong visual sense....[He] has a firm grasp of the history and culture of his setting but, as related by his brace of protagonists, the novel has an immediacy and freshness that never threatens to bog down his story....Roy's novel is remarkably entertaining for any reader, and would make a great read." -WGO Magazine

"This is exceptional historical fiction. The writing is intricate and beautifully-crafted. The author delves deeply into the time period, making it come to life for readers. The characters are well-developed, and the book can be understood on many levels. It leaves the reader with much to think about." -Keen Readers

"Young readers are treated to a thoughtful, artfully-rendered account of this time in Nova Scotia's history....We see a more balanced and clear-eyed depiction of events and motivations than textbooks are apt to provide. These two young men are engaging and sympathetic characters whose stories are beautifully told....Roy has created a rich and vivid historical drama....It is a noteworthy young adult offering that brings our history to life in a way that will capture the imaginations of its readers and invite discussion and further interest." -Atlantic Books Today

"....[an] amazing tale....a moving story that rings true and that resonates long after you put down the book...." --The Children's Book Review

“Mr. Roy has created a moving historical tale that touches on a part of Canada’s past that is often overlooked — observations from both inhabitants – those ‘discovering’ Canada and from the First Nations. It is an engaging story that can be used as a read aloud as it ties in with the school curriculum and can spark many debates and /or discussions within the classroom.”––Recently Read

"Philip Roy's writing is richly detailed, and it is clear he has done his research on everything from philosophers in the 1700s to Native practices and rituals. Blood Brothers in Louisbourg is a thoughtful, philosophical exploration of the topics of war, personal fulfilment, and finding where you belong...."--Amy's Marathon of Books

More About the Author

Philip Roy was born and raised in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He studied music and history before choosing a career in writing. His love for the ocean, enjoyment of traveling, and fascination for submarines has led to the creation of the Submarine Outlaw series (SOS). These are tales of high adventure on the seas and waterways of the world, but also involve mythology, geography, ecology, invention and an embracing love of people, places, animals and things. The Submarine Outlaw series details the adventures of a young submariner, Alfred Pynsent, and his quirky crew of a dog and a seagull, as they circumnavigate the world. The series includes the following seven books: Submarine Outlaw, Journey to Atlantis, River Odyssey, Ghosts of the Pacific, Outlaw in India, Seas of South Africa and Eco Warrior (Ronsdale Press). Philip's eighth novel in the Submarine Outlaw series, Stealth of the Ninja, will be published in the fall of 2016. He has also published two works of historical fiction, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg and Me & Mr. Bell (Cape Breton University Press). Blood Brothers in Louisbourg focuses on the story of two adolescent brothers, one of French origins, and the other of Mik'maw and French descent, as they face the siege of Louisbourg in 1745. Selected for the long list of First Nation Communities Read, Blood Brothers in Louisbourg has also been translated into French by Christian Roy, (no relation to Philip), as Frères de sang à Louisbourg (Les Éditions Perce-Neige). Me & Mr. Bell, (nominated for four major awards: the Canadian Library Association's Book of the Year for Children, the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People, the Silver Birch Award in the Forest of Reading, and the Hackmatack Children's Choice Award), is about a ten-year-old boy struggling with dyslexia who befriends Alexander Graham Bell and Helen Keller in 1908 (Cape Breton University Press). Philip has also written 27 stories in the Happy the Pocket Mouse picture book series thus far, and he shares them with audiences of all ages. His first two books in the Happy the Pocket Mouse series, (illustrated by Andrea Torrey Balsara), are Mouse Tales and Jellybean Mouse (Ronsdale Press). The third book in the series, Mouse Pet, is currently being illustrated, and is due out in the fall of 2015. When Philip is not traveling and visiting schools, he and his family live in Durham, Ontario, where he continues to write novels and compose music.

Good description of events at Louisbourg including the physical lay out of the fortress. Roy made it easy to visualize the era.
