5.0 out of 5 stars HIStory is in the mix
I am not a person who gets into "live" and "remix" albums, but this album is definitely a good one to purchase. I did not know of the music on it, until I bought a DVD of his videos, and saw/heard the title track. It was catchy from the start, as are all Micheal's hits. I eventually had to get the album. 3.0 out of 5 stars New songs = pretty good, remixes = blah
If this album was only remixes I would have probably skipped it. Don't get me wrong, I like a good remix and MJ has some very good ones out there, but HIStory was not always my cup of tea. I liked it, but I think the newer material here were worth the buy more than the remixes.

1 - Blood On The Dance Floor - The first of his very underrated songs. I really...

RIP Michael, the man who was off the wall, thrilling, dangerous, and invincible will live on for ever.

In 1997, Michael decided it was time to release a remix album. With this idea, MJ released BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR: HIStory IN THE MIX. I knew this remix compilation was going to be great, but I had no idea that it was so much better than I had originally expected. Michael always has a way of surprising his fans. The CD features 8 songs from his HIStory album in remixed form, with 5 newly recorded songs.

"BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR"
The first single from the album. This is such an incredible song. The music video for this song was such an incredible music video. I can't explain what it is about the video that had drawn me to it. All I know is that once I saw the music video for the first time, I was in awe.

"MORPHINE"
Great song.

"SUPERFLY SISTER"
Great song. I had actually heard that this song is about his sister, LaToya Jackson.

"IS IT SCARY"
Another great song. The song, "2 Bad", was not the only song to be sung during Michael's music video for "Ghosts". This song followed "2 Bad" during that music video.

"GHOSTS"
The second single from the album, released as a Double A-Side with "HIStory". A great song. As I said before, this song's music video turned out to be 38 minutes long ... literally. Before actually singing this song in the music video, Michael sang, first, two other songs: "2 Bad" & "Is It Scary".

"SCREAM LOUDER" (Flyte Tyme Remix) (performed by Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. This is one Hell of an awesome remix.

"MONEY" (Fire Island Radio Edit)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. Great remix.

"2 BAD" (Refugee Camp Mix)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. Anotehr awesome remix.

"STRANGER IN MOSCOW" (Tee's In-House Club Mix)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. Though, I prefer ballads not to be remixed, this remix is definitely awesome. I guess ballads being remixed into a dance tracks aren't bad, as long as they're remixed right.

"THIS TIME AROUND" (D.M. Radio Mix) (performed by Michael Jackson & John Forte)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. Great remix.

"EARTH SONG" (Hani's Club Experience)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. As I said before, beautiful ballads being remixed into dance tracks are pretty good, as long as they're remixed the righ way. This is one of those remixes. What an awesome remix.

"YOU ARE NOT ALONE" (Classic Club Mix)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. What an awesome remix.

"HIStory" (Tony Moran's HIStory Lesson)
Original version from the (1995) album ... HIStory: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE BOOK I. Great remix.

4.0 out of 5 stars All about dancing, but also feeling, August 25, 2009
This review is from: Blood on the Dance Floor: History in the Mix (Audio CD)
I consider this to be an album with two different types of songs on it, every one of which is designed to make you want to dance. It succeeds in that, if it does not entirely make you feel good the whole way through. The first five were new, and the last eight are club remixes with synthesizers. I prefer the new songs and they are as follows:

"Blood On the Dance Floor" and "Superfly Sister": I love the catchiness and melody of these songs which make you want to dance, and I notice two of my kids (16 and 14) have adopted them. Kids know.

"Morphine" is simply heartbreaking. Embedded in the middle of the song, in between menacing, hard-driving bookends where Michael's voice seems deliberately muffled and/or harsh, are a couple of stanzas dealing with demerol addiction that are wrenchingly sung to a searing melody. I am not going to lie to you and say this is easy to listen to, given what happened to MJ. But it's real, and again, the middle section is startling and sadly beautiful.

"Ghosts", and "Is It Scary" are catchy tunes around eerily haunting themes. Easy to dance to, again--in fact, hard not to dance to.

I'm not a big club remix fan, but I have to say I liked most of these on this album, especially "Money", "2 Bad", and "History". Certain phrases are repeated, synthesizers reinterpret, etc. I think the least successful track in this regard is "Stranger in Moscow", as this touching ballad seems out of place in this format.

All in all, this CD is dance-track driven, with as always with Jackson, a quality of emotion and tunefulness that stays with you after you've turned it off. I like having it in my collection of his stuff.

I love this CD. I personally don't agree with it being priced at only $5. After listening to it for about the 10th times, I love it more and more. It's different, but the beat & rhythm are awesome!!!

Blood on the Dance Floor is a very remarkable CD, and I listened with head phones on to really hear every thing that Michael is saying and the composure of the music. If you like up beat tempo and can understand it and get past his trouble time, then this is a very good choice. I rate this a five star. CJ

5.0 out of 5 stars greatness, August 16, 2009
This review is from: Blood on the Dance Floor: History in the Mix (Audio CD)
I have to say I only purchased this after Michael died, but I knew the songs Blood on the Dance Floor & Stranger In Moscow, they are awesome. But after getting this I really appreciated MJ all over again, he still had his mojo! I just wish I had gotten it when it came out. The song Morphine is awesome it has a fantastic rhythym and beat, although the content is sad especially now that he is gone, makes you wonder if he was really singing about himself. I love 2 Bad and Is It Scary they are great. Michael always poured his heart and soul into everything he did and this album is no different. RIP MJ I love you always

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, July 29, 2009

This is a gem that I have had for awhile and I love it. The "new" (I put that in quotes b/c the disc is 12 years old but you wouldn't know it to listen to it. Then again none of MJ's music ever sounds dated) music is phenomenal. The remixes are a great new take on old favs. highly recommended.

. . . you'll want to to jump up and dance or just stomp your foot which won't be good if it's on the gas pedal. Seriously though, I like to call this "The Ibiza Mix" because it's mostly a collection of dance music, with a combination of new material and remixes. I listened to this on my iTouch while riding the subway, and I had a hard time sitting still!

I won't deconstruct every song, so just some highlights. Dance remixes of previously-released material such as the haunting 'Stranger in Moscow' and the moving 'Earthsong' give each an entirely new identity, which is part of Jackson's genius. The vocals are untouched for the most part, but he gives us a different take by changing the music. I LOVE 'Scream Louder' which Jackson has remixed with Sly & the Family Stone's 'Thank You (for lettin' me be myself)'--I think I may be one of the few people who liked 'Scream' when it was originally released so this is a double treat for me since I'm also a fan of Sly Stone's. New material includes the very sexy title track (catch the video for this if you can!)and the provocative 'Morphine' whose pounding rock beat makes me want to grab a stripper's pole. The lyrics however, are quite sobering in light of Jackson's recent passing and subsequent personal revelations; the gentle, melodic bridge in the middle of the song gives me pause: Was he trying to convince us of the serenity it brought him? Is the pounding beat meant to convey the hard edge he lived with, which was only mollified by the drug? I almost hate myself for really loving this track, despite its subject matter and the possible message behind it.

If I have one quibble it's the remix of 'You Are Not Alone', which is one of my favorite Jackson ballads and should have been left well enough alone. Some things are perfect in their original state and this is one such gem. The remix is not bad, mind you, but you know how it is when someone tampers with something close to your heart. This is the reason for my 4 star rating.

So, I dare you to listen to this CD and not want to move. Go on . . . just try!
