Book Description

December 30, 2011
There exists an ancient elven proverb, dating before the time of man. Life and death, like day and night, meet at a point where they blend into one. It is that brief moment when anything is possible.

There was a time when four sparks of life burned brighter than the sun itself. Megan was born with power, Lucien born with station. Autumn was born full of life, while Nathan was entwined with death.

Peace has come and gone... The conflicts of old have returned-rejuvenated and driven. This is the beginning of the end. The children of Karn have come of age, and now they will take part in shaping the fate of Illyia.

Will they join forces, or with blood will they be divided?

Bloody great story March 25, 2012
By Aaron
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kevin Breaux's first book in this series, Soul Born, had such a unique twist that I couldn't wait to see what was in store for book two. Blood Divided did not disappoint. In Soul Born, we were introduced to the battle hero, Karn, the evil sorceress, Opal, and the beautiful elf, Tala. From this love triangle came, Megan and Nathan, Karn's children with Opal, and Autumn and Lucien, Karn's children with Tala. This is their story.
Breaux's characters are more fleshed out in this sequel. He gives multiple perspectives of the story from the viewpoints of various characters, thus the reader forms a bond with each character and is genuinely concerned for their welfare. The author also gives us a truly malevolent antagonist. Khaos is an evil killer that forces the reader to despise him and want to see him defeated. At the same time, however, the author gives the reader multiple looks into the inner psyche of Khaos, which provides clues as to why this man had grown into such a villain. Breaux has a penchant for strong women and continues that trend in Blood Divided. Megan easily became my favorite character because not only does she have a good heart, but she is strong and courageous. Also, like her mother, she has some sweet magic skills that allow her to lay the smack down on the enemy.
Amidst all the family drama of Karn's children, there is a political storm cloud that threatens to plunge Illyia into total war. This further complicates the issues facing the children of Karn as each child is forced to take sides and figure out how to survive in the ensuing turmoil. There are some frenetic and engaging action scenes involved in this plotline that keep the story moving and had me turning pages frantically, anxious to see what happened next.
While this book is obviously building towards another installment, it's not done in a way as to leave the reader without any sense of finality for this particular part of the story. The pacing feels right, and the reader is left wanting more but not feeling like the book ends too abruptly.
Blood Divided is a solid, well-written, fantasy novel that will draw you in and hold on tight from beginning to end. Bring on part three Mr. Breaux!

Amazing fantasy novel! March 17, 2012
Format:Paperback
I first heard about this book while browsing Goodreads, and saw that there was a giveaway listed for it. I immediately entered, and to my surprise I won! The cover is gorgeous and it is what initially caught my attention. Blood Divided is the second book in the Soul Born Saga, set 20 years after the first book. I haven't read the first book, Soul Born but the author provided enough background/history of the characters throughout the book so that readers can don't need to start in order.

The book follows the children of Karn, Illyia's beloved hero, two sets of siblings from the same father but different mother. Megan (depicted on the cover) and Nathan are the children of Karn and Opal the sorceress. Autumn and Lucien are the children of Karn and Tala (the elf). All four will come together in the kingdom of Illyia, as some form alliance and other seek retribution.

I read a couple of fantasy novels, but this is by far the best fantasy novel I've read in a long time. As I mentioned before I haven't read the first novel, but it feels as if I've already known the characters. The characters are well-written and feel so real that they leap off the pages. There was never a real good versus evil, black or white with the characters ....many of the characters walk in the gray area. Even though the book is central around four main characters, all the secondary characters still played a big part in the book and help shaped the central characters and the world itself.

The world that Breaux created is full of political intrigue, betrayal, love and loss. If you're looking for a well established world and a cast of amazing characters, then I highly recommend the Soul Born Saga. The pacing of the book was great; there was never a dull moment. This book will have you glued to the pages from beginning to end, with a conclusion that will have you begging for the next book, Flesh Ended. I definitely plan on reading the next book, in the mean time I'll probably go back and read the first book in the series, Soul Born.

Blood Divided is the second in the Soul Born Saga from author Kevin James Breaux and is my favorite so far! I have been an absolute fan of Kevin's work since Soul Born, absolutely loving his way with words. My favorite thing about the first book was that, while definitely following the epic fantasy tradition, there was no clear line between good and evil. I was happy to see this continue in Blood Divided, a fresh and different way to go with the fantasy genre. It helps create characters that are so much more believable, practically jumping off the pages, much more than just words on a page. There was a very interesting mix of characters in this book, many falling into that gray area between good and evil.

This is the kind of book that you fall into and become a part of the world in which it is set. You feel for and with the characters and you live in the story with them. There are twists and turns, sadness and anger, honor and betrayal, and no small amount of intrigue. I love a book that makes you both love and hate the same character throughout the story! This book had a bigger cast of people involved in the story, all of whom were completely developed no matter their role in the story. The twists and turns of the first book melded seamlessly with this book, with surprising resolutions to many of the questions from the first. The next book in the saga will be Flesh Ended, and I absolutely can't wait for it!
