Here we go again!, February 15, 2012
This review is from: Blood Divided (Paperback)
I've been waiting forever to get Breaux's sequel to Soul Born. After reading on his site that the publisher rushed out a bad version, I decided to hold off and wait for the new, fixed version to come out. *Finally* I got it and it was worth the wait! The characters are just as wonderful and flawed as they were in book 1...dark. Selfish. Wonderful. Dark. Did I say wonderful? The story-line was moving smoothly and still kept me feeling like I was in Dungeons and Dragons - which is a plus x100, being the fantasy freak that I am. Just as I predicted, Breaux is going somewhere and I can't wait for book III!

Great Follow up to Soul Born. Exciting and fast!, February 14, 2012
This review is from: Blood Divided (Paperback)
Ready for the fall of Illyia? It begins here with the sins of the past generation. Excellent follow-up to Soul Born. Illyia has become a new place and so this is a new beginning, but ties into Soul Born well. Lots of surprises here. Great action. Some romance. Even a little something for us horror fans. You can see how Kevin's skills as a storyteller have grown and I feel he's building up to something huge in the next book. I love how he's slowly telling the back story as he moves forward, it keeps me glued to the chair. Great job! If you enjoyed how Soul Born's characters were not fully good or evil, you will see how Kevin continues that trend here. Its about the characters journey and what sides they think will get them further and it ends with one person's decision.

Mixed about this one, February 14, 2012
I liked the writing style though there were a noticeable amount of typos or misused words such as weary in place of wary. My problem with the book was that it seemed dis-jointed at times and the characters didn't always behave the way you would expect a real person to behave in a given situation. For example, while the town was being invaded by an army, one of the main characters is napping and another goes on a picnic with her lover right after she saw her mother being killed and while the killer is still loose and looking for her. Some of the characters are likeable but everyone seems Bi-polar or Schizo in the book based on their comments and actions. One character is considered gentle and kind-hearted yet she slaps another character for saying something she didn't like and then goes back to being kind again. The ending was disappointing as it was left wide open for a sequel with no thought of any kind of closure. Literally one main character is stabbed, the town is overrun....the end The writer has alot of potential but he needs to reign in his style and make the characters less aimless and confusing. I never got a handle on what character was playing what part in the book and had a hard time distinguishing the good from the bad characters sometimes. With the exception of Megan and Vashe, I can't say I really liked any of them I never got a feel for what the motivation was of many of the characters and at times there seemed to be little point to the story. I felt like the author was setting the entire book up for the sequel and never really focused on what was going on in the book itself. Sequels are great but a reader needs to have a reason to read it and if the original story never goes anywhere whats the point.
I may be tempted to read the sequel in the hopes that the author will get his focus and tighten up the characters and their purpose a bit. I feel that it may be a good book for $.99 or so but $4.99 is too much for it in my opinion. I gave it 3 stars more for the potential of any future books by the author than I did for the book itself. It was a good first try but the Author needs to take it up a notch if he plans on making a living selling books.
