Book Description

In Blood Feud, Colorado Avalanche beat writer Adrian Dater not only submits that the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry was the most feverish match-up in recent years, but also that there was none better played. No fewer than twenty players have or will eventually make it to the Hall of Fame; the best scorers were matched up against the best goalies; brilliant coaches could be found on both benches; and two of the league's smartest general managers ruthlessly tried to one-up each other at every NHL trade deadline. Blood Feud is a rollicking story of a fierce, and often violent, rivalry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wingnut Residing in Denver May 22, 2007
As a 27 year Detroit native living the last 13 years in Denver, I was in the emotional vortex of this great rivalry. This book was a great read and brought back all the polar feelings from these incredible games and bloody fights. Mr. Dater retells this story in a bioptic fashion, delving into the important characters and the stories behind the story. He points out the strange ironic twists that festered into this Hockey hatred. His fact finding was thorough and impressive on both teams. His writing style is casual, easy to read and similar to Jon Krakauer's "Into thin Air." Anyone who suggests Avalanche bias is way off base. This Denver newspaper writer is arguably tougher on the Av's than the Wings with most negative ink heaped on Lemieux and Crawford and some not too flattering episodes by Patrick Roy. Luckily this was an easy read because I had a hard time putting it down after page 1. Sent a copy to my brother in Detroit and he was late to work the morning he cracked it open. He showed the book to his boss and his tardiness was quickly forgotten and his book quickly borrowed.

Adrian Dater has written an unbiased, insightful book about one of hockey's hardest fought rivalries. In this very readable account, Dater gives hockey fans a behind-the-scenes look at the people and events that made up this rivalry. Even though I followed this rivarlry on television and in the newsprint, I was unaware of the actual conversations and actions of the players and coaches on and off the ice. Mr. Dater also provides biographical accounts of some of the major participants, like Claude Lemieux and Darren McCarty. These accounts add insight into the rivalry. I would highly recommend this book to all hockey fans, young and old, especially to fans of The Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must have book for any serious hockey fan. August 13, 2008
Adrian Dater's account of the feud (and it was bloody!) between the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche is chuck a block full of previously unknown, but hilarious, peculiar (Scotty Bowman is a unique dude to say the least), and riveting inside information and anecdotes. Dater, a hockey writer for the Denver Post, is no homer, and plays it fair, being equally snarky and funny about both teams. Dater covered every game of the 90's between these two rivals, and its all facinatingly covered in this book. Its a terrific read and manditory bookshelf inclusion for all true hockey fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read, surprisingly unbiased April 22, 2008
I'm a big Red Wings fan, and while this book looked interesting at first glance, I worried that it would be slanted in the Avs favor/perspective given that the author has followed and written about the Avs since they moved to Denver. Happily, this was not the case, as both sides were evenly covered.

The strength of the book is its coverage of the history of several of the major players on each side as well as a revealing look behind the scenes. I watched most of these hockey games, but I didn't know much of what was going on in the front offices and lockerooms.

My only complaint is that more of the on-ice action could have been added in, and I think that this would have fleshed out the entire book more completely. All in all, though, this is a fun read and is strongly recommended for all Wings and Avs fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read for All Hockey Fans January 12, 2008
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was suprised by how unbiased this book was. Seeing that it was written by an Avs beat writer I assumed it would be one sided painting the Red Wings as the "Evil Empire" or what have you. That was not the Case. Not only did it cover the major games and playoff series of the rivalry it also gave short Bios of the key people involved ie Bowman, MacCarty, Draper, Roy, and of course Lemeiux.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read December 6, 2007
I just finished the book and WOW...loved it. I was in college during the great rivalry and ate up every second of the Avs-Wings games. Being a die hard Avalanche fan (and written by Denver writer) I was thinking it would be the same old stuff. Wrong I was, It showed the Detroit perspective and gave good incite of behind the doors actions/conversations. If you an Avs or Wings this book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Blood Feud Review April 14, 2007
By Chris
First of all, this book is worth the price just for, as other comments have attested to, the screaming match that Crawford had with Bowman in 97; vulgar, but albeit priceless stuff. Second of all, it would be nice to see a Detroit reporter put together a similar account because I don't know how everyone can take this account as "unbiased". This guy is an Avs reporter for the Post for crying out loud! He includes numerous excerpts from the apparently unabashed homer Avs radio man, while providing nothing from Ken Kal, the Wings radio man who, apparently with his middle-of-the-road approach, is too boring for this book. Look, I am an honest Red Wings fan and appreciated the rivalry between both teams, but there are definitely pro-Avalanche slants in this book. Granted there are few, but they are still there. I would appreciate a counter-offer from the Detroit perspective, maybe from Bob Wojonowski, who is probably one of the top three Detroit sports writers.
