5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh blood, June 29, 2006

Though it has aged, it hasnt coagulated yet. Despite the decay of the genre around it, this Blood remains fresh.

Blood is an intense first person shooter by Monolith in a horror/dark humor atmosphere. It is equally renowned for it's creativity and sadistic nature, as it is for difficulty. Blood is a game for those who love first person shooters, and thus are at least moderately skilled at them.

Boasting a morbid cast of monstrosities, Monolith's hemoglobin opus pits you against a dark cult, from which you play a cast down and sacrificed leader seeking your revenge. Swift axe wielding zombies, shotgun and tommygun wielding cultists, severed choking hands, transdimensional reapers, hell hounds, and all other manners of beast await you amidst the ravaged and bizarre landscapes you traverse as Caleb, seeking to strike down the dark god Tchernobog, your former master.

Blood innovates to a greater level in how you can kill such abominations, from the typical shotgun and machinegun (tommygun specifically) to the more creative in application, flaregun, dynamite with remote or proximity detonation, and aerosol can with lighter for a flamethrower or quick firebomb. However it takes death a step further with the technological tesla cannon, the incinerating life leech, and the sadistic assassin's favorite tool, the voodoo doll. More weapons await you in the game, but even more, Blood offered a unique dimension for the times of alternate firing modes, significantly expanding the tactical range of each device, and some could even have three functions if combined cleverly.

In Blood, you, and your opponents in singleplayer or multiplayer can be stabbed, jabbed, shot, riddled, maimed, crushed, roasted, exploded, scattered, and castrated, and it has the lush sprite artwork to indicate the misery all enjoy for the sake of others.

But where can such carnage take place? How about a funeral home, train station, an actual moving train, carnival, a variety of temples, a city undergoing a bombing campaign, hospitals, stores, deep within the woods, upon mountain peaks and moving sheets of ice, or even within the entrails of a giant creature? Blood certainly offers variety for those who seek to beget the title name.

Blood is outstanding in two aspects that have been long forgotten in some aspects by modern games. Art design and sound. Blood is an old game, on an old engine. But despite the pixellation and low resolution, it still looks good. The artwork is consistent thematically and in terms of the palette and every place works together quite well. Quite the contrast in the current trend of normal mapping uninspired photos of brick and concrete and then sampling at a high resolution.

The sound is unique for its music, effects, and detail. Blood sounds wonderful when it comes to all the attention paid to it... the smack of a zombies head when you kick it, the dripping of blood onto the ground from a freshly slain cultist, his foot still twitching. Break a window on a train and the locomotive becomes more audible when youre near the shattered glass. Combine that with deep weapon effects, howls of the damned, and play it amidst vibrato string sections and chilled pipe organs and it is a feast for the ears.

Blood is most of all, a horror tribute. It pays homage to great and obscure horror films alike through a host of references and inspired settings. It is however, as I warned, difficult for most, but it is definitely worth the romp. Blood, spill some.

A final note, this game does not function properly on Windows XP, Windows 98 is preferred, however some have had success, such as myself, emulating the game through either DOSbox or a series of patches as guided by Willis of the website deathmask. Dont let operating system differences get between you and one of the best first person shooters to hit the PC.

and I've always regretted it...until now...there's now a nifty piece of software called " dosbox ". just google it and it will be located within seconds. It creates a pseudo-dos environment that actually works in XP! I even have XP Pro and it still works !But on to the game...Blood is simply THE best and most challenging first person shooter ever made...probably ever will be made...it's unique and appeals to the gothic and horror fans...and the humor is unmatched...I mean what other game to you knock a enemie's head off with a pitchfork and then kick it around like a soccer ball?...yes, the graphics are dated but the fun factor is what we are measuring here folks...don't believe me? then tell me why more people bought Unreal Tournament over Quake 3 ? Q3 obviously had the better graphics...but UT was more fun...seeing a connection yet? You start off as a former minion to the underworld that was betrayed and left for dead...or so they thought...hehehe. The sound effects are so cool and the game itself will scare the hell out of you the first few times you play it...especially in the dark! Do yourself a favor and pick up this treat...either download dosbox if you are running XP , or if you saved a partition and installed both xp and 98 then you shouldn't even be reading this far down...order now! but don't pay that much from these a**pirates trying to get $25 bucks from you!

5.0 out of 5 stars BACK TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS...., July 28, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blood: Full Uncut Version (CD-ROM)
Get this awesome old-school horror game if you're into ... - well: Horror and old-school-gaming :-)
Blood is basically DUKE NUKEM 3D gone Horror and incorporates stuff from probably dozens of good horror classics such as:
- the haunting - friday 13th - evil dead - phantasm - return of the living dead - zombie - dracula - frankenstein - the shining... to name just a few (did I mention H.P. Lovecraft stories?)
The game is something in between seriously creepy and cartoonish - so you're gonna get both scared and amused - a rollercoaster ride pretty much like "From dusk till dawn" (pretty much plays like it, too). The designers must have WORSHIPPED horror movies (funny and creepy ones alike).
The game itself sports the best visuals ever created by the BUILD(tm) engine (Duke Nukem 3d, Hexen, Heretic) - a souped up version of the original DOOM engine. The places you are going to explore throughout the many levels are nothing short of incredible. I'll wet your appetite:
- morningside cemetery+funeral home (Phantasm)
- The Overlook(ed) hotel (The Shining) (awesome, HUGE level even by modern standars with the coolest level design I have ever seen in a game - yes that includes modern ps2, x-box and PC games like Doom3 and Half-Life2)
- Frankenstein's castle - Freddy Krugers cellars - Hill House (The Haunting) - a moving train(!) stuffed with barrels containing bodies for resurrection (Phantasm) - boat trapped in the icy wastes
The most incredible thing is the sound. Admittedly, it's not CD quality, but the sound-effects ... ah the sound effects!!! There's almost a new creepy sound around every corner: from the crickets in the cemetery to the ticking of the clock in the hotel lobby from the wind blowing through icy caves and howling outside the murals of old mansions to the voices of the undead and cultists, who pursue you - its GORGEOUS!!!
Don't even get me started on the cool weapons (pitchfork, voodoo doll, sawed off shotgun, flare-pistol, tesla-gun, life-leech....) and enemies (cultists, zombies, hell-hounds, gargoyles...)
Hey, you get the idea! Just make sure it still runs on your system: windows 95/98, dunno if it works with XP... (DON'T get me started on this mess :-) - complain directly to Big Bill).
And don't just go blastin', but enjoy the athmosphere of the whole thing - it (still) ROCKS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Let there be Blood!, April 16, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blood: Full Uncut Version (CD-ROM)
I will never forget the first time I saw BLOOD in action. It was 1996, and I was still enamored of such games as DOOM and not particularly interested in any "new" first-person shooters. That all changed when I walked into a friend's room in college and saw this scene unfold:

A graveyard, lit by a lurid moon. Spooky background noises. And lo, mumbling zombies approaching. Suddenly a flare gun ignited, and lead zombie was struck in the chest. He continued to advance, but then - oh dear God! - he burst into flames, screamed in a rage, and exploded in a fiery rain of entrails, eyeballs and body parts. The shooter, advancing, encountered his head and gave it a soccer kick through the graveyard, where it rolled, spurting blood. And the speakers emitted diabolical laughter.

I was addicted - doomed, one might say - before I even played. Such brutality! Such carnage! Such humor! Lemme at it!

That was twelve years ago, and BLOOD, while half-forgotten and largely unplayable nowadays due to a programming quirk that only lets it run on Windows 95 or 98, remains my all-time favorite game, the one I'd pick if I were stuck on that deserted island we all seem to end up on in our fantasies. For addictiveness, smooth playability, black humor, atmosphere, and ridiculously over-the-top action and violence, you just can't beat it.

As much as BLOOD has a story, it's this: Caleb was once a loyal servant-warrior to Tchernobog, a very evil god with a fanatical following on earth. Betrayed and murdered by the god along with his wife, Caleb wakes up many years later in his own grave, feeling just a bit on a resentful side. He embarks on a quest for revenge, looking to confront his former master over the barrel of a shotgun. Between him and his payback are legions of Tchernobog's minions, and that's where the fun begins.

BLOOD, even without its later expansion packs (ONE UNIT WHOLE BLOOD, PLASMA PAK and CRYPTIC PASSAGE) offered an impressive arsenal of enemies and weapons. One has various types of human monks, flame-breathing hellhounds, flesh-eating zombies, flying gargoyles, assorted lesser monsters (such as disembodied hands, like Thing from THE ADDAMS FAMILY but nastier in temperment) and various Bosses to shoot at; and to shoot at them, a sawed off shotgun, a flare gun (delightful), dynamite of several varieties, a Tommy gun, a napalm launcher (fabulous), and some other gizmos, including a voodoo doll. Caleb isn't bound by the annoying restrictions of other FPS from his era: he can look up and down and jump as well as the usual movements, and he can effect his environment in a positive (by which I mean destructive) way. He also has some goodies which render him invisible and grant him the power to leap tall buildings in a single bound, which is very fun even when it isn't practical.

The real reason to play BLOOD, however, is that it is timeless. Graphically, by today's standards, it's primitive, and in many ways is just your standard FSP/key hunt with some very minor puzzles to solve. But what it does, it does brilliantly. The villains are incredibly satisfying to kill - shooting a monk with a flare gun and then listening to him scream as he runs about like a human torch is a pleasure only a sick few can enjoy, and blowing up a zombie with a rocket launcher, then playing soccer with his head has to be performed to truly understand it's entertainment value. The boards are imaginatively thought-out and frequently contain little asides to famous horror movies - one closet has Freddy Krueger's hat and sweater, one whole board is a sort-of reproduction of Crystal Lake complete with ch-ch-ch, ha-ha-ha sound effects and Jason Voorhees' nasty little shrine to mamma. And Caleb is so junkyard-dog mean and crazy, he might have walked right out of Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD (he talks exactly like Bruce Campbell). Finally, the deathmatch option is far superior to anything which existed at the time or, for that matter, probably exists today. You can type insults to your opponent after you kill him!

Aside from its annoying unplayability on Windows 2000 or XP (even if you have VM-ware!) BLOOD is a total winner, an all-time classic that cannot disappoint. Now pick up a pitchfork and stab something!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best First Person Shooters of all time., December 31, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Blood: Full Uncut Version (CD-ROM)
I started playing video games in 1998, starting with none other than Duke Nukem 3D. Thirteen years later, I finally get my hands on a copy of Blood. I'm blown away to say the least.

Blood puts you in the shoes of Caleb, a man who worshipped the evil god Tchernobog, all for the love of a girl. Tchernobog kills you all, and you rise from your grave, pitchfork in hand and quoting "Army of Darkness" already (I live...Again!), you are out to massacre the entire cult of Tchernobog, and the leader himself. The game has a pretty hokey story, but what do you expect from a 1990's First Person Shooter? You're playing them for the gameplay, not to hear some epic story the caliber of Mass Effect or Metal Gear Solid.

Now, the gameplay. It is once again, typical 90's FPS action, but with a few things that seperates it from games like Duke Nukem 3D or Shadow Warrior. First things first, the blood. Obviously it'll have blood with a name like Blood, but the levels are off the charts here. On the walls, on the ceiling, floors, it is EVERYWHERE. Now I've played Mortal Kombat, Soldier of Fortune, etc, but Blood has some of the most extreme over the top blood/gore/violence I have ever seen in a video game, if not the most. Onto the weapons, they have to be some of the most imaginative, funny, awesome weapons I've ever used in a video game. Heck, the game's flamethrower is a lighter and an aerosol can. Yeah, it's that awesome. Some others that really stand out is the Double Barreled Shotgun, Tommy Gun, Dynamite, Tesla Cannon, and the Voodoo Doll. Also, Blood may be the first video game to introduce secondary fire modes on all weapons. So for example, hit the fire button the the double barreled shotgun, you shoot one shell. Hit the alternative fire button, fire both barrels. It's some really cool stuff.

Right now, I am going to dedicate a portion of this review to the level design. It is the best I have ever played. Sure, Doom was cool. Duke Nukem 3D had some great ideas and cool levels. Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight had memorable levels. But Blood, Blood blows all of them out of the water. I don't want to spoil them all for you, but I have to tell you a few. Camp Crystal Lake from Friday the 13th is in there. Freddy Krueger's Boiler Room from Nightmare on Elm Street can be found. You can blast your way through the Overlook Hotel from the Shining. There is a secret level from Dawn of the Dead, called "Mall of the Dead", and it's a mall filled with zombies, complete with locations from the 1978 Dawn of the Dead mall, and a store called "K-Marche"..Marche is French for Mart/Store..so K-Mart, is in the game. Awesome. Also, in one of the expansions, Boggy Creek, from the Bigfoot series of movies, is in the game. Movie designed levels don't tickle your fancy? That's alright, there's a complete carnival with working games and rides, (wanna ride the Happy-Go-Pukey?..Didn't think so), a moving train, a soccer field that pits you against zombies, and you kick their heads into goals for points, and this isn't even scratching the surface of the epic levels to be found in the game.

The game is filled with references. Sometimes though, there's too many at once. I loved the references in Duke Nukem 3D, but here, sometimes it's too hard to take in all the references at once, and you can miss some pretty good jokes/references because too much is going on. Minor complaint, but it's happened to me already. The enemies in the game are alright, nothing to be really excited over, but still cool none-the-less. I found Duke 3D's enemies to be more memorable though. The sound is great, hearing shells/bullet casings hit the floor, ricocheting bullets, the music, but the enemies sometimes, the sounds they make are so annoying! Once again, a nit-picky complaint, but I feel it needs to be included. There is also a map editor, but I have not tried it yet.

This game is for: Gore Hounds, FPS fans, Horror movie fans, anyone looking for a great game.
This game is NOT for: Wimps :p, easily disgusted, non shooter fans

If you are a fan of First Person Shooters, pick up this game. NOW. Warning- It doesn't run on anything other than Windows 95/98 without DOSBox. I am playing it on a Gateway computer from 1999 running Windows 98. Shooter fans, you owe it to yourself. Forget about Call of Duty, forget about Halo, forget about Battlefield, Blood is the best. I would even call it the best first person shooter of all time, but I'm bias to Duke Nukem 3D. Let's just say if I had never played Duke 3D, Blood would be my favorite.

Happy Gaming Everyone, hope this review helps! :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent 1st person shooter for the PC, December 8, 2004
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Blood: Full Uncut Version (CD-ROM)
Blood was released at a time when shooters dominated the PC market (Before MMO took over). With decent graphics, sound, and unique arsenol of weapons it seperated itself a little from other titles.

The story here is that Caleb is a killer for a demon named Tchernobog along with his three other allies they were a deadly group. However once the demon had enough of their services he had them killed. Caleb however survived and vowed revenge.

This is where the game starts off. Most shooters start you off with either a gun or knife. Not this one, you start off with a pitchfork. That's right a pitchfork. From there the usual array of weapons appear, shotgun, rocket launcher, machine gun (in this case a Tommygun), but then we get to the unique stuff such as a Voodoo Doll, Aerosol Can, a magic staff known as the Life Leech, and three forms of dynomite.

the difficulty is what you expected out of a shooter, starts easy enough and then increases to insane proportions. It's a fun almost nostalgic title now that is recomended. Happy hunting.

Very good service. ordered from seller marked as "acceptable" condition saying that disk 1 was "very" scuffed and disk 2 had "very minor" scuffing, selected standard shipping on the 18th delivered on the 21st (much faster than expected), upon arrival opened case and disk 1 had minor scratches (about 16 out of 100. 100 being the worst you could imagine and 1 being the best) and disk 2 was like new (looked like it had been pulled out of the case once, not more than 3 times) came in ORIGINAL jewel case with ORIGINAL book (the book had 2 very hard to notice "rings" on the top {like someone used it for a coaster underneath something thick}) to put it short "the product ordered was in MUCH BETTER condition than marked, and i am 100% satisfied with this seller" (even more so because of the fact that i have been looking for "BLOOD spill some" in almost every thrift store i could find for 50 miles, over the last 7 years) best buy EVER. if i could i would rate "10 out of 5"
