Eve Duncan has seen some of the most evil people imaginable through her work as a forensic sculptor and her search for the body of her long dead daughter, Bonnie. Yet now she is up against the most dangerous of criminals yet... Jelak. It will take everything Eve has to face down this latest threat.
When a senator's teenaged daughter, Nancy Jo Norris, is found murdered and drained of blood, with a stained goblet close by, they know this is no ordinary killer. Then Eve finds a similar goblet in her own home, realizing this madman has set his sights on her. Jelak is obsessive in his conviction that he is meant to be a vampire god, on a path to ultimate power and immortality culminating with the drinking of Eve's blood.
This Blood Game is complicated by the fact Eve believes Jelak may know something about Bonnie's murder. Then there is the fact that Joe Quinn, Eve's long time lover, has had his own latent psychic abilities awakened by Megan Blair (see Quicksand). He finds he can communicate with ghosts, some of which include Nancy Jo... and Bonnie, even calling them to him from long distances. All Eve knows is that time is running out, and if they don't find Jelak before he finds Eve, the Blood Game may end in her own death.
Blood Game is another fantastic thriller from the bestselling Eve Duncan series. This is quite a chilling page turner, bound to keep you reading late into the night... with all the lights on! We see an even darker, more frightening bend to this installment in the series, and more of a paranormal aspect. Jelak is possibly one of the most engrossing and most evil villains I've seen in a long time, truly terrifying in his obsession to become immortal. Iris Johansen deftly portrays what a grip the lust for power has on so deadly a monster. He chooses his victims based on their innate strength, gradually increasing, as he works his way to the ultimate prize of killing Eve, putting everyone she cares about in danger. I dearly loved the opportunity to visit so many old friends in Eve's world, even if the circumstances surrounding them are pretty dire. Though of course, we do hope that somehow by the end of the book, everything will work out and our friends will be safe.
One of the very best aspects of the Eve Duncan series is Eve's relationship with Joe Quinn. Tension has been high between them in recent books, as Quinn grows weary of Eve's personal quest to find Bonnie and bring her home, rather than just letting things go and moving on with her life. Now that he has developed the ability to commune with the dead, Quinn's own personal demons push to the forefront once more as he tries to deal with this new gift... or curse depending on one's perspective. Yet this new ability of Quinn's finally helps him to understand a little better why Eve can't say good-bye to Bonnie, and as a result we finally see these two starting to bridge the gap between them.
Iris Johansen still has what it takes to write a marvelously page turning thriller. While Blood Game seemed to be a little bit shorter than some of her past books, it is still every bit the page turner and I could not put this one down until I knew whether or not Eve would be safe. What's even better is the very obvious fact Iris Johansen still has many more stories to tell about Eve and company and I can't wait for more! I discovered the series only in the past year or two, but I have been making tracks through the books, desperate for more adventures.
