Educational & FUN for the five and up set -- a kid's dream!,

This review is from: Blood and Goo and Boogers Too: A Heart-pounding Pop-up Guide to the Circulatory & Respiratory Systems (Hardcover)
FUN! FUN! FUN!! This guide tells you just about all you need to know about the cirulatory and respiratory systems (assuming you're not a cardiologist or ENT, of course) in a very kid-friendly manner. It's gross enough to be entertaining, but not so gross that parents won't want to read it. Every page is filled with activities -- wheels to turn, tabs to pull, flaps to lift -- For example, the first page features giant pop-up nose, with a flap on each side to "Pick Open!" Under the flaps, you'll learn how smelling works. There is a booger flap --pull the booger out of the nose and you'll learn that compulsive nose-picking is called "rhinotillexomania." That's important. Pull the tongue out of the mouth and you'll learn about how your taste buds work. Open another flap and you'll learn about the advantages and disadvantages of picking, sniffing & blowing. (If possible, look at the back cover of the book on Amazon's search inside this book function -- it shows what the first page looks like when the book is opened.)
The second page features a neat model of breathing -- open the rib flaps, and underneath you'll find the lungs. Pull the diaphragm flap, and the lungs expand to fill with air. The third page is about blood -- it features a popu up of a kid getting a shot in the tush. You push the syringe to give the injection and learn why shots are an effective way to deliver medicine throughout the body. That page also features a bandage flap, and a vial of blood. The next page is all about the heart. Each page features a close-up photograph of something mysterious -- such as cilia in your airways, bacteria, a heart valve, lung tissue -- all explained when you lift the flap. Other than these close-up photographs, all of the other illustrations are cute and cartoonish -- very kid-friendly. Nothing too scary. Basic topics covered include: smelling, tasting, breathing, respiration, blood, bruises, germs, the heart, and circulation. The cover features a touchable blob of green goo coming out of a child's nose. Overall, this book is highly recommended. This is one of those books that kids will keep coming back to, and the fun facts (like what causes hiccups) will stick with them for a long time. Also highly recommended is Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop, a "deliciously disgusting plop-up guide to the digestive system." It's similar in style and format to Blood & Goo & Boogers Too! -- but the realistic tongue on its cover edges out not-so-realistic boogers on Chewy Gooey's cover.

I found this to be a very good book to pique the interest of young children, as well as some adults, in the science of the body. Encourages curiosity and discovery.

My granddaughter loves these books. They really are a lot of fun and she learns so much about the body from this one and the other about where food goes.
