Book Description

The neutral zone is no place for a vampire.

A right wing for the Chicago Blackhawks, all Travis Payne wants is to see his name on the Stanley Cup. He certainly doesn’t expect to be attacked by a vampire on the eve of the Finals. But when he wakes up in the Warm Room of the Cook County Morgue, he knows his life will never be the same.

Fortunately, Travis can still play hockey with the Chicago Cobras, the local vampire league franchise. Cobras captain Marcus Antonius, a former Roman gladiator, is more than willing to help Travis adjust to his new life, his new team, and the erosion of his formerly flaming heterosexuality. Travis is a difficult student, though—all he wants is his life to return to normal.

Unfortunately, learning to be a good vampire is even more complicated than following concussion protocols, and Travis will have to let go of everything to find a new normal.

Warning: Contains two hot alpha males playing hard on the ice and in the bedroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally engaging page turner June 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
In Blood on the Ice, Katriena Knights takes readers to a Chicago where vampires co-exist alongside humans, regulated and restricted by a bureaucracy that attempts to manage their natural inclinations. But one area where the vampires' super strength and speed excel are in the "Blood Leagues" of no-holds barred ice hockey. When star human hockey player Travis Payne is "turned" and recruited to the Blood Leagues, he struggles to come to terms with his new life -- all he's lost, as well as all he's gained, including a new love interest and a chance for redemption in the sport he loves.

You don't have to be a fan of ice hockey or vampires (I'm not) to get caught up in the spell Knights weaves in this book. The vivid world building and realistic, complex emotions make this an engrossing read for any fan of romance fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this story July 21, 2014

I really enjoyed this story. I honestly didn't think I would like it as much as I did since I'm not a big fan of stories revolving around sports. This is really more of a "coming to grips with changes" story.

The MC, Travis, is an NHL player whose team is about to play in the semi-finals for the Stanley cup when he is attacked and changed into a vampire. In this world, everyone knows about vampires and they are regulated by the government and discriminated against. Travis spends the story trying to adjust to and accept the fact that his whole life has changed. He can no longer play in the NHL, his family is afraid of him and has turned their backs on him, and the NHL is trying to keep his name off the Stanley Cup even though he earned it. He also has to deal with changes due to becoming a vampire, such as the fact that all vampires are bisexual and getting something to eat is now a very erotic task. As I said earlier, while playing for the vampire hockey team is part of the story, it is not the main focus. The journey of Travis accepting his life as it is now is the focus of the story. It just happens that hockey is a part of Travis' life.

One of the best parts of this story is the humor. I laughed my way through a good part of the book. It is a very dry humor, which is absolutely loved. There was also a lot of tension and confusion in Travis as he tried to accept his new reality. There were a few places where I was genuinely uncomfortable reading, just like Travis felt at the time.

The only reason I give this story 4 stars instead of 5 is the rushed ending. Travis has been fighting for certain things since the beginning of the story. Toward the end of the fight, he becomes a complete jerk.

This is well-written, but it's not a romance by any means. It's the tale of a guy who's bitten by a vampire and turned, then has to go to a sort of rehab to learn to be a vampire, before he's released back into normal society, where the majority of vamps are civilised.

We get to see how his family reacts, we get to see how he controls his hungers, and how he adapts to playing vampire hockey. Unfortunately, that's pretty much it, as he seems to have non-penetrative sex with his various donors, as does his alleged love interest, but their own sex scenes are sort of flossed over, a la Barbara Cartland.

Not hot, not sexy, not sure why it was couched as a romance.

I totally enjoyed this story and felt that it had a lot of potential to grow into a series. The main characters are fun and I like the storyline of vampires that play hockey. A nice quick read for a lazy afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT MEN on ICE,Very Nice! August 31, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Among my favorite things in life is a good Stanley Cup Playoff and watching ice hockey at all levels.

So when I saw my favorite genre combined with men on skates at the highest level they can play I knew it would be a winner.

One needn't "know" ice hockey at any level to enjoy this book. The game, as well as the story, are only improved with a slice of the life revealed on the ice.
