5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
This book was a great escape for a mother of 3 small children. I could not put it down even when I should have been sleeping. I have always loved a good gangster book or movie and this one explored a very different cast of characters, one that I did not know existed. It was well written and I felt like I really got to know Ron Gonen and could relate to some of his...

3.0 out of 5 stars Another True Crime Book, Another Rat
While I must admit to enjoying Blood and Volume, I question whether or not the topic warranted the effort. This loose band of criminals hardly qualifies as a "Mafia." The exploits described are fairly ordinary and the primary actor became a cooperating witness. BFD! The Henry Hill book has already been written.

The author has talent. Perhaps next time he...

This book was a great escape for a mother of 3 small children. I could not put it down even when I should have been sleeping. I have always loved a good gangster book or movie and this one explored a very different cast of characters, one that I did not know existed. It was well written and I felt like I really got to know Ron Gonen and could relate to some of his struggles despite the distance from my own reality. I look forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent nonfiction, April 25, 2007
This review is from: Blood and Volume: Inside New York's Israeli Mafia (Hardcover)
I grew up in NY and had never heard of the Israeli mafia so I picked up this book out of curiosity.

Copeland does a fine job of relating the facts in the case of this violent organization that helped usher in the cocaine craze of the 1980s.

With the pen of a veteran reporter Copeland delivers a clear and fast paced narrative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than fiction, April 12, 2007

Sometimes, real-life events can be better than any fiction. That's how I felt about Copeland's Blood and Volume, which chronicles the short, violent life of the Israeli Mafia through the eyes of Ron Gonen, who is now in the Witness Protection Program. Copeland obviously did an obscene amount of research to produce this book and puts it together in a compelling way that reads quickly and keeps you entertained. If you like true crime -- or just a really cool story -- check this out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Page-turner, March 30, 2007

I am not the type of person who seeks out true crime reading. That said, I picked up Copeland's book and could not put it down. Copeland's style is very readable, and the subject matter is fascinating. I also found it extremely helpful that the author refreshes information provided in earlier chapters so readers do not get confused when less significant characters are re-introduced to the plotline. The hours spent reading this book were a true escape for me, one I thoroughly enjoyed.

This was one of the few books that I have read in one sitting. The story and the characters come together to create one of the most exciting, intense, and provocative books that I have ever read. I cant wait till the movie comes out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, May 18, 2007
This review is from: Blood and Volume: Inside New York's Israeli Mafia (Hardcover)
This is an exciting story of great success and great failure. The stories are fun and should be adopted into a movie!

Not as much blood as one would think but the heists they pulled: pretty interesting. Overall a decent read for a weekend. Enjoy
