I read the reviews on the video and decided to rent the movie before I came to a decision to purchase it. I'm glad I rented as opposed to buying it. The DVD version was excellent when it came to production, but really lacking when it came to the heart of the matter, a plot. This book is far superior to the movie. In the beginning, the story places you somewhere in the middle of a story and to other parts unknown. This makes for difficult reading, but the further you read the more the scattered events come together. The story keeps you wondering what the heck's going on and compels you to read on. The artwork is very good and take note, not for the younger crowd due to it graphic violence and nudity. If you enjoy manga of a different sort, then I highly recommend this book.

Not for kids, Tamaoki's graphic novel is sexually explicit, very violent, and tragic all at once. It's drawn in Tamaoki's trademark realist style, edgy, gritty, and very unpretty. But then Saya, the anti-heroine, lives in a nasty world, and the ogres she is hunting down are even nastier than the Americans who have bred her as a ogre-hunter. A note -- Japan doesn't really have vampires, those Transylvanian relatives of Count Dracula who want to drink your blood. Saya's enemies are flesh-eating monsters, cannibals and ogres. I thought the ending was about as perfect as it could be -- bitter and yet thoroughly satisfying. If you like gothic horror and noir, or better yet, Japanese horror manga, you'll find Blood top-notch. But be warned -- it's not a nice story. Powerful and elegantly drawn, but not nice.

Even though the film, Blood: The Last Vampire, is visually stunning and created by a top-animation team it does have some "clunky" parts. That said, it remains a popular anime title and for good reason. Despite its flaws, there is a certain charm that keeps audiences (including myself) coming back for more. The same can be said about this manga, which starts in the present day with Saya still alive and hunting things that go bump in the night for the US government. (If you are not familiar with the film, you should still be able to follow this new storyline.) Tamaoki (the writer and artist of this book) has an original and energetic style that I really enjoyed. The book is worth buying for the artwork alone. Be warned though, he doesn't hold anything back! The book contains graphic (but in my opinion not gratuitous)sex and violence. The story starts out strongly, but I feel that it has a few too many predictable twists at the end. That said, I have found myself re-reading this book for its sheer original style and (at the beginning) strong storyline. Blood: The Last Vampire 2002 may have a few clunks, but like the film, there is a certain charm that keeps me coming back for more.

New Story!,

Over all I thought this was a very good manga. It answered some questions raised by the movie and, as a fan, it was just plain nice to see more of Saya's adventures. It took a few unexpected twists, such as finding out Saya has a sister (sort of...)! I enjoyed this story more for it's dark moodiness and what it revealed about the origins and character of Saya, than it's mild tittilation value. It does deal with adult themes such as sexuality,(these are not Anne Rice's vampires which have replaced sex with blood drinking), the darker side of genetic manipulation, and even, urp, cannibalism, so it is NOT a book for the kids, even younger teens may need help with some of the deeper concepts in this story. Be warned though. If you didn't like the movie, you probably won't enjoy this book. Also, if you are looking for a continuation of the adventure in the movie you may find this book a bit of a disconnected jump as the story line moves from the 60's to the present. Finally, if you don't know the movie you probably won't be able to follow some of the action in this book, you should get the movie first. Hope this helps.

Good artwork and a simple plot but with a slightly interesting, if twisted, ending. Sequel to the events of the anime, decades later, Saya is once again hunting down vampires - Chiropterans stalking teenagers. Will she be able to wipe them out or are they waiting for her?

Good, if not better than the anime.,

I read this an was shocked at how good it was. I am an owner of the DVD and heard a book was in the works. I was very happy to hear this. I was even more happy when I read it. It is a work of art with an amazing style. It's extremely graphic in many ways. For one, the violence is extreme, and two, there is a lot of nudity and a part in the book with graphic sexual images. But those are not reasons to hate this. I reccommend it if you are not bothered by sex or violence, other wise I would suggest backing away.

Ok, This is supposedly the sequel to the stunning hit anime. Unlike the movie, this book was terrible. I remember nothing in the origional anime about lesbians, yet that is the main theme for the novel. Ther is also some plot that is totally confusing, but I attribute that to a terrible english translation. Instead of buying this, get a good graphic novel instead, or just watch the anime again.

I've heard of the DVD and I checked it out, but I didn't buy it, even though I was dying to get it! Well, one day in a book store, my eyes came across this book, and I immediantly took it from the shelf. I sat down and read the whole book in the matter of minutes. Right in the beginning, it takes you into the book and fills you with confusion. But later on, it all comes together and satisfy your taste, but also leave you confused, wondering and wanting for more. :) It has some nudity, well...a lot...kinda, and one part of sexual humor. It also has some language. If you are one of those people like me, who don't mind those stuff, then you will LOVE this book!
